MLB roundup: Shohei Ohtani sets HR mark as Dodgers dominate Mets

Shohei Ohtani and Andy Pages achieved significant milestones by hitting home runs, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a commanding 10-0 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday, concluding a challenging homestand.

Tyler Glasnow (4-1) demonstrated control on the mound, recording 10 strikeouts over eight innings. Despite the win, the Dodgers have only managed a 3-7 record since April 10, losing all three series during their recent nine-game homestand.

Ohtani's home run in the third inning set a new MLB record for players born in Japan, surpassing Hideki Matsui with a total of 176 home runs. Pages, on the other hand, hit his first career home run in his fifth game.

The Mets, who had been on a six-game winning streak, were limited to seven singles as their impressive run came to an end. Prior to this loss, New York had an impressive 12-3 record after starting the season with five consecutive losses.

In another game, the Cleveland Guardians secured a 6-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics, completing a three-game sweep. Will Brennan's home run and Josh Naylor's bases-clearing double contributed to Cleveland's success. Tanner Bibee (2-0) pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs, while Tim Herrin, Nick Sandlin, Cade Smith, and Emmanuel Clase combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.

The Milwaukee Brewers also achieved a sweep, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0. Colin Rea and three relievers combined for a six-hit shutout. Owen Miller's single drove in the two decisive runs in the seventh inning.

The Brewers have now won four consecutive games. Bryan Hudson (1-0) pitched 2 1/3 innings, Elvis Peguero recorded two outs, and Joel Payamps secured his third save by closing out the ninth inning.

Cardinals starting pitcher Sonny Gray (2-1) recorded an impressive 12 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of play. However, he did give up two runs on five hits and a walk.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals lost their fourth consecutive game and missed several opportunities to score, going 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and leaving 10 baserunners stranded.

In the Yankees' game against the Rays, pitcher Luis Gil secured a career-high nine strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. The Yankees managed to hold on and win the rubber game of the three-game series against Tampa Bay.

Gil (1-1), who missed last season due to Tommy John surgery, allowed only one unearned run on two hits and three walks to earn his first victory since 2021.

Alex Verdugo's two-run single in the fifth inning proved to be the difference-maker as the Yankees continue their successful season, winning six out of seven series.

Moving on to the Orioles' matchup against the Royals, Cole Irvin delivered an outstanding performance, pitching a shutout into the seventh inning. Irvin (1-1) went 6 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and two walks while striking out two.

Baltimore's offense was ignited by back-to-back home runs from Colton Cowser and Jordan Westburg in the second inning, giving them a 2-0 lead. Royals' starter Seth Lugo (3-1) had a tough outing, surrendering four runs on nine hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings.

This marked Lugo's shortest start of the season and ended his streak of seven consecutive quality starts dating back to September 15, 2023.
