MLB roundup: Tigers stun Padres with grand slam in ninth inning

Parker Meadows delivered a grand slam with two outs in the top of the ninth inning on Thursday night, propelling the visiting Detroit Tigers to a remarkable 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres.

With this win, Detroit averted a three-game series sweep through a thrilling ninth-inning comeback against closer Robert Suarez (8-3). Justyn-Henry Malloy initiated the inning with a single, followed by a walk from Jace Jung. After Spencer Torkelson was retired, Colt Keith walked to load the bases.

Suarez struck out Kerry Carpenter for the second out, but Meadows capitalized on a 3-2 fastball, sending it 361 feet into the left field stands for his sixth home run of the season.

San Diego missed an opportunity to close the gap on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West standings. The Padres are currently five games behind the Dodgers but remain a half-game ahead of Arizona, which lost in San Francisco, for the first wildcard position in the National League.

Phillies 5, Marlins 2
Bryson Stott hit a home run and drove in two runs as the Philadelphia Phillies triumphed over the Miami Marlins, marking their fifth consecutive victory.

Stott recorded a 2-for-4 performance for the National League East-leading Phillies in the first game of a four-game series. Kody Clemens added a two-run double during a four-run sixth inning.

Marlins starter Adam Oller (1-2) allowed four runs on five hits and five walks over 5 1/3 innings, while striking out six. Nick Fortes contributed two hits for Miami, which had won three of its previous four games.

Rangers 3, Angels 1
Cody Bradford delivered six strong innings, and Adolis Garcia hit a three-run homer in the first inning, leading the Texas Rangers to a victory over the Los Angeles Angels in Arlington, Texas.

This marked Bradford's third consecutive start in which he pitched six or more innings while allowing two earned runs or fewer, lowering his ERA to 3.05.

Josh Jung had an impressive 3-for-4 outing, while Marcus Semien and Nathaniel Lowe each contributed two hits, as the Rangers secured their eighth win in ten games.

Reds 1, Astros 0
Ty France disrupted a pitchers' duel with a decisive solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, propelling the Cincinnati Reds to a victory over the Houston Astros and completing a three-game series sweep.

Tony Santillan (2-2), who secured the final two outs of the seventh, delivered a scoreless eighth inning for the Reds. Alexis Diaz achieved his 25th save of the season with a flawless ninth inning. Bryan Abreu (2-3) surrendered the home run and was charged with the loss.

Both starting pitchers were left with no-decisions despite their commendable performances. In his second career major league start, Cincinnati right-hander Rhett Lowder allowed four hits over 6 1/3 scoreless innings, issuing four walks and striking out three. Meanwhile, Astros right-hander Hunter Brown pitched six shutout innings, permitting four hits, one walk, and recording six strikeouts.

Twins 4, Rays 3
Edouard Julien launched a three-run home run, enabling the Minnesota Twins to secure a split in their four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Matt Wallner also contributed with a home run for the Twins, who ended a two-game losing streak. Minnesota starter Pablo Lopez (14-8) allowed three runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out nine.

Junior Caminero drove in two runs for the Rays, who found themselves trailing 4-0 after the third inning. Tampa Bay starter Taj Bradley (6-10) permitted four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out ten over seven innings.
