MLB roundup: White Sox lose 21st straight game to tie AL record

The Chicago White Sox equaled the American League record for consecutive losses by suffering their 21st defeat in a row on Monday night, falling 5-1 to the Oakland Athletics, who benefited from seven impressive innings pitched by left-hander JP Sears.

The White Sox have not secured a victory since July 10, thereby matching the AL record previously established by the Baltimore Orioles in 1988. The all-time major league record for consecutive losses stands at 23, set by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1961.

In the first inning, Oakland managed to score without a hit against Ky Bush (0-1) during his major league debut. The White Sox equalized in the fourth inning, thanks to a one-out double from Andrew Vaughn followed by a two-out RBI single from Andrew Benintendi.

Unfortunately, this marked the end of their scoring for the evening, as they could only muster two additional hits against Sears and relievers Austin Adams and Tyler Ferguson.

Sears (9-8) achieved his fifth victory in the last six starts, restricting the White Sox to just one run and three hits, while issuing one walk and recording five strikeouts.

Rangers 4, Astros 3 (10 innings)
In a thrilling conclusion, Josh Smith delivered a two-run, walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, securing a dramatic win for Texas against Houston in Arlington, Texas.

Corey Seager also contributed with a home run for the Rangers, who outperformed the Astros in hits, 5-4. Smith's home run marked his 12th of the season and brought in automatic runner Adolis Garcia.

For Houston, Alex Bregman hit a home run, while Jeremy Pena recorded two hits and two RBIs, as the team suffered its sixth loss in eight games.

Reds 10, Marlins 3
Elly De La Cruz showcased an impressive performance with two home runs, while Nick Martinez, celebrating his 34th birthday in his hometown, secured the victory with five scoreless innings as Cincinnati triumphed over Miami.

De La Cruz concluded the game with a remarkable 4-for-5 record, including three RBIs, three runs, and four extra-base hits, which featured two doubles. Cincinnati also benefited from a two-run homer by Noelvi Marte in the fourth inning and a solo home run from Ty France, who recorded three hits, in the fifth.

Martinez (6-5) allowed only four hits and issued no walks. Miami's Jesus Sanchez highlighted the game with a colossal 480-foot home run in the sixth inning off reliever Jakob Junis, marking the longest home run in the majors this season.

Miami's starting pitcher, Roddery Munoz (2-6), struggled, yielding six runs—four of which were earned—on seven hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings.

Mets 6, Cardinals 0
Sean Manaea delivered an impressive performance, striking out 10 batters over seven innings as the visiting Mets secured a shutout victory against St. Louis in a rescheduled game due to a postponement on May 8.

Manaea (8-4) permitted six hits and issued no walks, marking his second consecutive start without allowing a run, during which he has accumulated 14 scoreless innings and 21 strikeouts. Tyrone Taylor contributed significantly with a three-run double, while Jeff McNeil added a solo home run and crossed the plate twice for the Mets.

On the other hand, Cardinals starting pitcher Andre Pallante (4-6) struggled, giving up five runs on five hits across 4 2/3 innings. The Cardinals were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities, finishing 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Giants 4, Nationals 1
Matt Chapman propelled the visiting San Francisco Giants to victory over the Washington Nationals with a three-run homer in the first game of a four-game series.

Tyler Fitzgerald also made a notable contribution with a solo home run, while Jerar Encarnacion recorded two hits for the Giants, who have triumphed in eight of their last ten contests. San Francisco's starting pitcher Logan Webb (9-8) allowed just one run and four hits over 5 2/3 innings.

For the Nationals, starter Patrick Corbin (2-12) surrendered four runs and seven hits in six innings, striking out six batters and issuing one walk. Travis Blankenhorn stood out with two hits, but the Nationals have now lost six of their last eight games.
