MLB roundup: Yamamoto dominates as Dodgers blank Cubs; Cardinals, Padres and Guardians notch shutouts

Yoshinobu Yamamoto dazzled on the mound Friday night, tossing six scoreless innings while Tommy Edman delivered a three-run homer to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-0 win over the Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers improved to a perfect 7-0 at home and earned their first shutout of the season.

Yamamoto (2-1) allowed just two hits, struck out nine and walked one in his second win over Chicago this season. Tanner Scott closed out the game with a clean ninth for his fourth save. Freddie Freeman returned from the injured list but went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, while Shohei Ohtani finished 0-for-4 with two strikeouts as well.

Matthew Boyd (1-1) kept the Cubs in it through five innings before yielding three runs in the sixth. Chicago was held to two hits and lost back-to-back games for the first time since opening the season against Los Angeles in Japan.

In Cincinnati, Jeimer Candelario broke an 0-for-15 slump with a two-run homer, and the Reds edged the Pirates 5-3. Brady Singer (3-0) earned the win, and Emilio Pagan recorded his third save. Bailey Falter (0-2) struggled with control, issuing five walks over five innings.

San Diego rolled to an 8-0 win over Colorado, fueled by Nick Pivetta’s 10-strikeout, three-hit performance over seven shutout innings. Jose Iglesias drove in two runs during a six-run fifth, as German Marquez (0-2) was knocked out after 4 2/3 innings.

Detroit held off Minnesota in a 7-6 win, with Dillon Dingler going 3-for-5 and Zach McKinstry driving in two. Will Vest (1-0) got the win in relief. Byron Buxton led the Twins with a home run, two RBIs and a stolen base. Jorge Alcala (0-2) allowed four runs without recording an out.

In Tampa Bay, Danny Jansen’s four-RBI night, including a home run, propelled the Rays to a 6-3 victory over Atlanta. Taj Bradley (2-0) went six strong innings, while Bryce Elder (0-1) took the loss for the Braves, who have now dropped 10 of their last 13 games.

Nathaniel Lowe delivered a dramatic pinch-hit, three-run double in the eighth to push the Nationals past the Marlins, 7-4. Josh Bell homered against his former team, while CJ Abrams exited early with an injury. Edward Cabrera, in his 2025 debut, exited with a no-decision for Miami.

St. Louis blanked Philadelphia 2-0 as Andre Pallante (2-0) pitched seven scoreless innings, part of a combined three-hitter with two relievers. Ryan Helsley earned his second save. Phillies starter Aaron Nola (0-3) struck out seven but allowed five hits and four walks in five innings.

Jose Quintana made a strong debut for Milwaukee, throwing seven shutout innings as the Brewers beat the Diamondbacks 7-0. Brice Turang had three hits and two RBIs, and Jackson Chourio extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Eduardo Rodriguez (0-1) gave up three runs for Arizona.

Cal Raleigh’s eighth-inning, two-run homer lifted the Mariners to a 5-3 win over the Rangers. Rowdy Tellez and Jorge Polanco also went deep. Carlos Vargas (1-1) earned his first major league win. Jacob deGrom lasted just four innings for Texas.

Pete Alonso led the Mets past the Athletics 7-6, homering and driving in three. Alonso also had an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. Luisangel Acuna added two hits for New York, which has now won seven of eight. Miguel Andujar homered and drove in three for the A’s.

Houston erupted for a 14-3 win over the Angels behind Yainer Diaz, who crushed his first career grand slam and posted five RBIs. Diaz later added a run-scoring double. Mike Trout homered for Los Angeles in the loss.

Rain shortened San Francisco’s 9-1 win over the Yankees to six innings, but not before Jung Hoo Lee smashed a three-run homer. Marcus Stroman (0-1) was chased in the first inning after allowing five runs in his shortest career start. He is set to undergo X-rays on his left knee.

The White Sox snapped an eight-game skid with an 11-1 rout of the Red Sox. Omar Narvaez drove in three, while Davis Martin (1-1) pitched into the seventh for the first time in his career. Boston committed five errors, leading to six unearned runs.

Cleveland shut out Kansas City 7-0 as Gabriel Arias homered and had three hits. Five Guardians pitchers combined to hold the Royals to five hits. Tim Herrin (2-0) picked up the win in relief, and Angel Martinez added three hits and an RBI.
