MLB roundup: Yankees' Juan Soto belts three homers in victory over White Sox

Juan Soto, at the age of 25, hit three home runs and recorded four RBIs, while Nestor Cortes, 29, delivered an impressive performance with seven scoreless innings, leading the New York Yankees to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

Soto achieved his sixth multi-home run game of the season and marked the first three-homer game of his career. He launched a two-run homer in the third inning, followed by solo home runs in the fifth and seventh innings, allowing New York to gain a half-game advantage over the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East standings.

Chicago's rookie right-hander Jonathan Cannon (2-6) was responsible for Soto's initial two home runs, allowing three runs and five hits over 4 2/3 innings. The third home run was given up by Fraser Ellard.

Cortes (6-10) restricted the White Sox to just three hits and issued no walks while striking out nine batters. The White Sox's record has now fallen to 2-21 since the All-Star break.

In another matchup, the Minnesota Twins triumphed over the Kansas City Royals with a score of 13-3. Zebby Matthews made a strong debut, pitching five innings to secure his first major league win as Minnesota pulled ahead decisively in Minneapolis.

Matthews (1-0), who advanced from Class-A to the majors this season, allowed only two runs on five hits against the Royals. Max Kepler contributed significantly, going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, as the Twins aim for a three-game sweep on Wednesday.

For Kansas City, MJ Melendez and Salvador Perez each contributed a solo home run, while Michael Massey recorded a 2-for-4 performance with a double and an RBI. Seth Lugo (13-7) struggled, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits over four-plus innings.

Guardians 2, Cubs 1
In his season debut, veteran pitcher Matthew Boyd allowed only one run while navigating into the sixth inning, and rookie Jhonkensy Noel provided a decisive solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, leading the host team Cleveland to victory over Chicago.

Boyd, making his first major league start since June 2023 following recovery from Tommy John surgery, demonstrated impressive form by allowing three hits, striking out six batters, and issuing no walks over 5 1/3 innings. Pedro Avila (4-1) secured the win, while Emmanuel Clase recorded his 37th save.

For the Cubs, Nico Hoerner contributed two hits but was ultimately the final out of the game, caught in a rundown between second and third base. Chicago's starting pitcher, Javier Assad, surrendered one run and five hits across 4 2/3 innings.

Tigers 15, Mariners 1
Jake Rogers delivered a grand slam and amassed seven RBIs, while Kerry Carpenter hit two home runs in his return from the injured list, as Detroit overwhelmed the visiting Seattle team.

Rogers' seven RBIs marked the highest total for a Tiger since Ryan Raburn achieved the same against the Chicago White Sox in 2007. In addition to his home run, Rogers also recorded two doubles.

The Mariners' George Kirby (8-9) faced a challenging outing, allowing 11 runs on 13 hits over 3 2/3 innings, making him the first major league pitcher this season to concede 11 earned runs in a single game.
