MLB roundup: Yankees Move On in Playoffs, Guardians Keep Their Hopes Alive

The New York Yankees triumphed over the Kansas City Royals with a score of 3-1 on Thursday, securing their advancement in the Major League Baseball playoffs, while the Cleveland Guardians kept their postseason hopes alive with a narrow 5-4 victory against the Detroit Tigers.

Key contributions for the Yankees came from Juan Soto, Gleyber Torres, and Giancarlo Stanton, each driving in runs. Pitching standout Gerrit Cole delivered an impressive performance, allowing only one run over seven innings, as the Yankees clinched their best-of-five American League Division Series with a 3-1 victory, propelling them into the American League Championship Series.

Their next challenge will be against either the Detroit Tigers or the Cleveland Guardians. The Guardians equalized their series at two games each, thanks to a pivotal two-run home run by David Fry in the seventh inning, complemented by a sacrifice bunt that provided an additional insurance run in the ninth, ultimately proving decisive.

In Kansas City, Soto initiated the scoring for New York in the first inning with a single that brought home Torres, who had started the game with a double. Torres extended the lead to 2-0 with a single in the fifth, and Stanton contributed with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning.

This scoring was sufficient for Cole and the Yankees' bullpen to secure the victory.

"What a performance by GC to come out here and do his thing," remarked Yankees slugger Aaron Judge to TBS regarding Cole, who allowed six hits, issued no walks, and recorded four strikeouts on 87 pitches. "That's why he's our ace. He goes out there and delivers performances like this when we need him to."

Closing pitcher Luke Weaver successfully retired three consecutive batters in the bottom of the ninth inning, securing the victory.

Kansas City's sole run occurred with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, shortly after a brief altercation ensued following Yankees second baseman Anthony Volpe's aggressive tag on Maikel Garcia.

The Yankees, who faced defeat in the 2022 ALCS against the Houston Astros and did not qualify for the postseason last year, are expected to be favored against either Cleveland or Detroit in the ALCS, which will commence on Monday in New York.

The Guardians are set to host the Tigers for game five of their series on Saturday.

Fry propels Guardians
After being shut out by the emerging Tigers in games two and three, the Guardians found themselves trailing 3-2 when Fry was summoned to pinch hit with one runner on base and two outs in the top of the seventh inning.

He launched a 97-mph fastball from Tigers reliever Beau Brieske over the left-center field fence, giving the Guardians a lead they would not relinquish.

"I was just aiming to connect with a pitch," Fry remarked. "I had chances yesterday to bring in some runners but fell short. So, I was determined to come through for the team, and fortunately, it cleared the fence."

Cleveland added an additional run in the top of the ninth, with Fry executing a bunt that enabled Brayan Rocchio to score from third base. Rocchio had reached base with a single and advanced to third on Steven Kwan's hit.

This insurance run proved crucial as the Tigers managed to score in the bottom of the ninth. Justyn-Henry Malloy began the inning against Cleveland's closing pitcher Emmanuel Clase with a double to left field. He advanced to third on a ground out by Parker Meadows and subsequently scored on another ground ball by Jace Jung before Clase secured the final out.

Cleveland ended a streak of 11 consecutive losses in playoff elimination games, a downturn that had persisted since game six of the 1997 World Series.

Jose Ramirez contributed a home run for the Guardians, while Zach McKinstry hit a home run for Detroit in a closely contested match that featured two comebacks by the Tigers to equalize the score. Ultimately, Detroit secured a 3-2 lead with Wenceel Perez's run-producing single in the sixth inning.
