Mohamed Salah wins Football Writers' Player of the Year

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been crowned the 2025 Football Writers' Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year, earning the prestigious honour for the third time in his illustrious career. The Egyptian superstar claimed an overwhelming 90% of the writers’ votes, the largest winning margin of the 21st century.
The award comes after Salah spearheaded Liverpool’s Premier League title charge, helping Arne Slot’s men lift their first league crown since 2020 and equal Manchester United's record of 20 English top-flight titles.
At 32, Salah enjoyed one of the finest seasons of his career, tallying an astonishing 28 goals and 18 assists—a combined 46 goal contributions. That tally set a new Premier League record for the most goal involvements in a 38-game season, underlining his immense influence throughout Liverpool’s dominant campaign.
His electric form was a cornerstone of Arne Slot’s successful debut season as Liverpool manager, with the Reds reclaiming domestic supremacy in emphatic style.
Salah Joins Thierry Henry in Elite Company
By winning the FWA award in 2017-18, 2021-22, and now 2024-25, Salah joins Arsenal legend Thierry Henry as the only players to win the accolade three times. The recognition cements Salah’s status as one of the Premier League's all-time greats and one of the most consistent performers of his generation.
“Mohamed Salah has consistently delivered on the biggest stage and his impact this season has been nothing short of phenomenal,” said an FWA representative.
Virgil van Dijk and Isak Complete the Podium
Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk finished second in the voting, with Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak coming in third. Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice placed fourth, following another impressive season anchoring the Gunners’ midfield.
Contract Extension Ends Transfer Speculation
Amid swirling rumours over his future, Salah recently committed to Liverpool with a new two-year deal, keeping him at Anfield until 2027. The extension provides a massive boost for the Merseyside club as they look to secure a record-breaking 21st title next season and surpass their arch-rivals Manchester United in the all-time title count.
Alessia Russo Wins Women's FWA Award
On the women’s side, Arsenal and England striker Alessia Russo won the FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year award, beating Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw, last year’s winner. Russo becomes only the second Arsenal player to claim the title, capping off a standout season in the Women’s Super League.
