Montpellier 2-2 LOSC Lille: Hosts fighback to rescue point despite David's double

Montpellier, currently at the bottom of the table, managed to secure an unexpected point against LOSC Lille, who are vying for a top-three finish, by equalizing in stoppage time for a 2-2 draw at Stade de la Mosson. This result extended Lille's unbeaten streak to 13 matches across all competitions.

Given their record of eight victories and four draws in the last 12 encounters, Lille would have been optimistic about facing Jean-Louis Gasset’s struggling side. However, Les Dogues did not register a shot on target until the 39th minute, when Mitchel Bakker's attempt was comfortably saved by Benjamin Lecomte.

This moment marked a turning point in the match, as shortly thereafter, Montpellier nearly scored a stunning goal. Arnaud Nordin's header set up Teji Savanier, whose powerful volley was expertly stopped by Lucas Chevalier.

Just a minute later, a reckless challenge by Jordan Ferri on Matias Fernandez-Pardo compelled the referee to award a penalty to the visitors. David converted the spot-kick, sending Lecomte the wrong way for his eighth goal of the season.

However, if Lille believed they would have an easy path to victory from that point, they were mistaken. In first-half stoppage time, a corner taken by Savanier was headed in by Issiaga Sylla, leveling the score before the break and leaving the teams tied at halftime.

Failing to learn from their earlier mistakes, Montpellier began the second half by conceding another penalty, this time due to a careless foul by Joris Chotard on Remy Cabella.

Lecomte successfully anticipated the play this time; however, David's shot into the upper part of the net was out of his reach.

During their 600th home match in the top flight, La Paillade exerted considerable effort to secure a second equalizer but squandered a prime opportunity when Savanier set Musa Al-Taamari free on goal, only for the Jordanian to miss the target, shooting over the bar with only Chevalier to beat.

It seemed that the match would conclude without further incident until the 94th minute, when a hopeful cross led to a chaotic situation in the Lille penalty area, allowing Nordin to emerge from the confusion and score the equalizer.

Bruno Genesio’s team missed the opportunity to ascend to third place in the standings, despite maintaining an unbeaten streak in their seventh consecutive away match.

Despite the encouraging conclusion, Montpellier has not secured a victory against LOSC since 2017 and faced a setback late in the game when Tanguy Coulibaly was sent off for an off-the-ball incident.
