Morocco manager Walid Regragui takes responsibility for bitter AFCON exit

Following the unexpected elimination of the Moroccan national team from the Africa Cup of Nations, coach Walid Regragui (48) expressed his complete accountability for the defeat. He acknowledged the team's deficiency in converting opportunities into goals during their 2-0 loss to South Africa in the last-16 match on Tuesday.
The Atlas Lions, considered as one of the favorites before the tournament, were eliminated from the competition by South Africa at the Laurent Pokou Stadium in San Pedro. Despite having several opportunities to score, they failed to capitalize on them and paid the price.
In the 57th minute, Evidence Makgopa scored against the run of play, and Teboho Mokoena sealed the victory in stoppage time with a well-curled free kick. The free kick was awarded due to a last-man foul that resulted in the dismissal of Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.
Morocco had a chance to equalize with five minutes remaining when they were awarded a penalty for a handball. However, Achraf Hakimi's attempt hit the crossbar, adding to their disappointment.
Coach Regragui acknowledged the missed chances and took full responsibility for the team's performance. He mentioned that at this level of competition, any wasted opportunity can lead to immediate punishment.
Morocco had high hopes of winning their first Cup of Nations title since 1976, especially after their impressive performance in the 2022 World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals, becoming the first African team to do so.
However, their performances in the Ivory Coast have been underwhelming, and the absence of key players like Hakim Ziyech and Sofiane Boufal due to injuries has affected the team.
Regragui expressed his disappointment and assured the fans that they will learn from this unexpected setback. He acknowledged the support of the fans and recognized that this result was a letdown for them.
