MotoGP: Francesco Bagnaia wins Italian Grand Prix

Francesco Bagnaia, the reigning MotoGP champion, emerged victorious at the Italian Grand Prix held at the Mugello Circuit.

In a thrilling final lap, Bagnaia's teammate Enea Bastianini managed to overtake Jorge Martin from Pramac Racing to secure second place.

In a departure from Ducati's traditional red livery, Bagnaia opted for the Italian 'Azzurri' blue on their home circuit.

With determination in his eyes, Bagnaia aimed to achieve a double victory at Mugello and narrow the gap between himself and championship leader Martin.

Despite being demoted to the second row due to a three-place grid penalty, Bagnaia made an impressive start.

He swiftly overtook four riders and took the lead on the opening lap, igniting the enthusiasm of the Ducati fans in the stands. Bastianini also secured a commendable third place.

To celebrate his triumph, the world champion strummed an imaginary guitar before being presented with an electric guitar by his fans. His helmet and racing suit were inspired by the iconic rock band KISS.

Although Marc Marquez, who qualified fourth, posed a challenge for Bastianini, the Spaniard struggled to overtake him.

Marquez also had to keep a watchful eye on Pedro Acosta from Tech3, who was hot on his heels, eagerly waiting for an opportunity to capitalize on any mistakes made by the six-time MotoGP champion.

Throughout the race, the battle for the top four positions remained fiercely contested, with less than a second's gap between each contender.

However, overtaking proved to be a difficult task for the riders on the high-speed circuit until the final stages of the race.

"It wasn't easy starting from P5, but I had a strategy to go on the outside," Bagnaia expressed. "To win today after a week like this is fantastic."

Marquez took advantage of an opportunity with six laps remaining as Bastianini went wide at the San Donato bend, allowing the Spaniard to move up to third place by using the slipstream and cutting inside.

However, with only two laps to go, Bastianini found his pace again and managed to overtake Marquez to reclaim third place, while Martin was closing in on Bagnaia for the lead.

In a surprising turn of events, Bastianini, who is at risk of losing his spot on the factory team at the end of the season, snatched second place from Martin on the final lap, leading to jubilant celebrations in the stands and the Ducati pit garage.

"It's an amazing feeling. We had some issues but we managed to solve them and we really pushed hard today," Bastianini expressed. "When Marc passed me, I knew I had to give it my all. In the last lap, I saw Jorge ahead and I believed I could take second place, so I made the move in the final corner."
