Motta reflects on Juventus' first Serie A loss of the season against Napoli

Juventus manager Thiago Motta expressed his disappointment after his team suffered their first Serie A defeat of the season in a 2-1 loss to league leaders Napoli on Saturday. Motta pointed to Napoli’s advantage of having a full week to prepare for matches, as they are not competing in European tournaments this season.
Antonio Conte’s Napoli overcame an early deficit with second-half goals from Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa and Romelu Lukaku, extending their lead at the top of the table to 53 points, six ahead of Inter Milan, who have two games in hand. Juventus remain fifth with 37 points.
"I'm disappointed with the defeat. We had a good first half, causing our opponents a lot of problems, a side that is not top of the table as a fluke because they have a great coach and had the opportunity to prepare all week for this," Motta told DAZN.
Motta highlighted the difference in preparation time, noting that Juventus’ busy schedule hindered their ability to maintain the intensity they displayed in the first half:
"However, we did not have that luxury, and it showed, because all the good work we did in the first half, we struggled to replicate in the second, and that is why we were unable to win."
Juventus dominated the first half, taking the lead through debutant Randal Kolo Muani, who recently joined on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. However, Napoli turned the tide in the second half, dominating possession and creating opportunities that led to their victory.
"We reacted well in many other situations, we just didn't do it today. Juve have not won here since 2019; it is important to point that out. It is the sixth consecutive defeat for the club here, so evidently, this is a tough place for us," Motta said.
Motta attributed the loss to a series of small mistakes that Napoli capitalized on:
"The idea was to press and defend well, but we were unable to do that because our quality was lacking, and when we started giving the ball away, Napoli tended to win the duels, and that gave them an advantage," he explained.
While the loss marks a setback for Juventus, Motta’s side will aim to bounce back as they fight to climb higher in the Serie A standings. For Napoli, the victory reinforces their position as title favorites, with Antonio Conte’s team continuing to impress this season.
