Mozambique 2-2 Ghana: Black Stars all but out of tournament after stunning Mozambique fightback

Ghana relinquished a two-goal advantage in the dying moments of the game, allowing Mozambique to stage a remarkable comeback and secure a thrilling draw in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

As a consequence, the Black Stars concluded their campaign in Group B by clinching the third position, narrowly edging out the Mambas on goal difference. However, despite accumulating two points, Ghana's chances of advancing to the next stage remain uncertain.

Ghana faced the possibility of being eliminated from the AFCON group stage for the second consecutive time, having gone six matches without a win in the competition. They needed a positive outcome to turn their fortunes around.

Right from the start, it was evident that Chris Hughton's team understood the importance of the task at hand. Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo tested Ivane Urrubal with a powerful shot from long range within the first minute of the game.

Their attacking intent paid off soon after, as Joseph Paintsil earned a penalty by maneuvering between Mexer and Nanani and getting tripped in the process. In hindsight, the penalty decision seemed debatable, but captain Jordan Ayew made no mistake and calmly slotted the ball into the net, marking his 98th appearance for Ghana.

The introduction of Andre Ayew in the second half showed Ghana's determination. He surpassed the legendary Rigobert Song as the player with the most AFCON appearances, having played in eight consecutive tournaments.

However, his first involvement in the game was a caution from the referee. He then urged his teammates to remain composed when Mozambique's Bruno Langa came close to scoring with a powerful shot from Lau King's pass.

Just as Mozambique seemed to be gaining momentum, their hopes were shattered when the referee awarded another penalty, this time for a handball by Mohammed Kudus. Jordan Ayew stepped up once again, this time choosing the opposite side and leaving Urrubal helpless.

It was unfortunate that Mozambique's tournament would be defined by two penalty kicks after a 12-year absence from the competition. They did manage to score what they believed to be a consolation goal late in the game when Andre Ayew handled the ball in the box, allowing Geny Catamo to convert from the spot.

In a remarkable turn of events, Ghana's fate was no longer in their own hands as Reinildo equalized with a well-timed header in stoppage time. With Egypt also securing a dramatic result in the group's other match, it appears that Ghana is likely to exit the group stage with just two points, mirroring their previous tournament.
