Nadal return to singles action with dominant win over Borg in Bastad

This marked Nadal's inaugural singles match post his loss in the first round at Roland Garros on May 27, and he secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory despite the damp weather conditions.

18826"Both Nadal and the 21-year-old Borg, who currently holds the 461st rank worldwide, received wild card entries for participation in the Swedish clay-court championship.

Even though the former world number one had a brief slip on the wet surface, Nadal managed to break for 3-1 and capture the first set in just 43 minutes, aided by four aces.

An immediate break in the second set gave the Spaniard an advantage, and he clinched the match on his second match point after 1hr 25min of play, marking his eighth ATP tour match victory this season.

"I'm pleased to defend my title," quipped Nadal, who had last competed in Bastad when he won the title at the young age of 19 in 2005.

18827"I have been engaged in less tennis in recent months," he continued, "but the experience has been positive. Performing in front of a packed audience holds significant value for me, and I'm fortunate to have played amidst dry weather conditions.

"During challenging moments, I've managed to persist with the support of my team, although the fans play an immense role as well. Their incredible energy is truly motivating."

The 22-time Grand Slam champion also commended his opponent, son of the retired former world number one Bjorn Borg, who is currently 68 years old.

"It's a tremendous privilege to compete against the offspring of one of the greatest legends in the history of our sport," stated Nadal."

"I think he played quite well; he has a great future ahead of him. I wish him all the very best."

Nadal will face fifth seed Cameron Norrie in the second round, following the British player's victory over Slovak Jozef Kovalik 7-6 (7/4), 6-4.

Nadal skipped Wimbledon to focus on the Olympics, which will be held at Roland Garros, where he has won 14 French Open titles.

On Monday, Nadal also teamed up with Casper Ruud for a doubles win on clay in Bastad, just two weeks ahead of the Paris Games.

Top seed Andrey Rublev begins his campaign on Wednesday against 121st-ranked Thiago Tirante of Argentina.
