'Nadalcaraz' dream team take Roland Garros by storm

The Roland Garros champion and the rising star of men's tennis received thunderous support from the enthusiastic crowd at Court Philippe Chatrier as they secured a 7-6(4) 6-4 victory over the sixth-seeded Argentine pair of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni.

Alcaraz had already competed earlier in the day, defeating Lebanon's Hady Habib 6-3 6-1 in the singles event on a rain-affected opening day of Olympic tennis, where only a few matches were completed.

The men's top seed Novak Djokovic dominated Australian alternate Matthew Ebden with a score of 6-0 6-1, while women's favorite Iga Swiatek of Poland began her quest for gold with a hard-fought 6-2 7-5 win against Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu.

However, the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the debut of the 'Nadalcaraz' partnership, a story that is expected to leave a lasting mark on the clay courts of Paris in the days to come.

This marked the first time that the 14-time French Open champion Nadal and Alcaraz, who has already clinched four Grand Slam titles including this year's French Open and Wimbledon, had teamed up in a competitive match.

Despite a few initial hiccups and Alcaraz's admission of nerves while playing alongside his idol, they quickly found their rhythm to overcome the talented South American duo in the presence of Nadal's son Rafa Jr and the two daughters of Spain's King Felipe.

"It was an unforgettable moment for me, undoubtedly," Nadal shared with the press. "I believe it was the same for him as well, to step out on this stage and compete together, representing Spain in the Olympic Games. It's a combination that is truly hard to beat."

Nadal's preparation was highly unusual, as he spent Friday night carrying the Olympic torch in a boat on a choppy River Seine during the opening ceremony in the rain.

Injury concerns loomed before his anticipated last appearance at Roland Garros, but Nadal showcased his skills on the red clay court where he first triumphed when Alcaraz was just a toddler.

Nadal is set to compete against Hungary's Marton Fucsovics in a packed Sunday schedule of 68 matches. Despite his previous Olympic victories in 2008 and 2016, Nadal expressed the need to consult with his team before making any decisions.

"I will discuss with my team and then make the most intelligent choice to maximize our chances of bringing home some medals," said Nadal, who has contemplated retirement due to injuries this season.

While Nadal aims for a third Olympic title, Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, has yet to secure one in his four previous Games. Djokovic has faced heartbreaking Olympic defeats, including two singles semi-final losses, with his sole medal being a singles bronze from 2008.

In his quest to add an Olympic gold to his collection, the 37-year-old Djokovic had a smooth start by defeating doubles specialist Ebden in just 53 minutes. Djokovic may potentially face Nadal in the next round if the Spanish player overcomes Fucsovics.

The Serb expressed his anticipation for his first-round match tomorrow, emphasizing that facing his opponent feels like a final for him in any tournament, especially at Roland Garros given the achievements of his potential 11th career meeting with Nadal.

Swiatek commenced the day's events at the closed Court Philippe Chatrier, 50 days after securing her fourth French Open victory on the same court, acknowledging that it was a challenging start.

After advancing to the second round in Tokyo, she shared with reporters her satisfaction at progressing, highlighting the difficulty of first-round matches, particularly at the Olympics.

The heavy rain disrupted the opening day of tennis, leaving thousands of ticketless fans disappointed as no matches were played on the outdoor courts.

Italy's Jasmine Paolini, the French Open and Wimbledon runner-up, defeated Ana Bogdan from Romania with a score of 7-5, 6-3. The day concluded with Germany's Angelique Kerber extending her career by winning against Japan's Naomi Osaka with the same score, despite the wet conditions.

Unfortunately, French favorite Caroline Garcia faced disappointment as she was defeated by Romanian Jaqueline Cristian.
