Naomi Osaka defeats Alycia Parks to reach her first final since 2022

Former world number one Naomi Osaka (27) advanced to her first final since 2022 on Saturday, decisively defeating unseeded American Alycia Parks at the Auckland Classic.

The four-time Grand Slam champion from Japan secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory, providing a significant boost in confidence as she prepares for the Australian Open, which commences on January 12 in Melbourne.

This match marked Osaka's first semi-final appearance since 2022, following a hiatus from tennis and the birth of her child in 2023. She made her return to the sport a year ago.

Demonstrating composure absent in her earlier matches in Auckland, the 27-year-old delivered a polished performance, setting the stage for a final on Sunday against Denmark's Clara Tauson.

"I am truly delighted to reach the final here; this is actually my first time making it to a final just a week before Melbourne, so it feels like a career milestone," Osaka, a two-time Australian Open champion currently ranked 57th, remarked.

"While I am pleased in my mind, there are always aspects to refine and improve, regardless of age."

Osaka's formidable power and accuracy proved overwhelming for the 78th-ranked Parks, who struggled in her second match of the day after her quarter-final was delayed due to rain on Friday.

All four of Osaka's victories this week have come against lower-ranked opponents in a tournament that has not featured a particularly strong field.

However, the competition will intensify in the final against the 50th-ranked Tauson, who triumphed over unseeded American Robin Montgomery with a score of 6-4, 6-3 in the other semi-final.

Earlier in the day, Tauson also defeated American top seed Madison Keys 6-4, 7-6 in a quarter-final that was interrupted by rain on Friday night.
