Naomi Osaka eases into Miami Open second round with confident win

Naomi Osaka continued to make progress in her return from maternity leave with a convincing victory over Elisabetta Cocciaretto, defeating her 6-3, 6-4 in the Miami Open.

This win propels Osaka into the second round, where she will face another mother who is also making a comeback.

Cocciaretto, who is currently ranked 51st in the world, posed a potentially challenging initial test for Osaka in Miami. This was due to the fact that the Italian had recently emerged victorious in the WTA 125 event in Charleston.

However, Osaka's superior skill level became evident as she displayed glimpses of the exceptional form that has led her to win four Grand Slam titles.

She swiftly broke Cocciaretto in the first opportunity and maintained her dominance throughout the opening set by denying her opponent any break chances.

In the second set, Osaka only required one break to secure victory. She sealed the match with an ace on her second match point.

Next, the Japanese player will face Elina Svitolina, the 15th seed from Ukraine. Svitolina, who returned from maternity leave less than a year ago, impressed Osaka with her performance at Wimbledon last year, where she reached the semi-finals.

Osaka expressed her admiration for Svitolina's achievements and considers it a great honor to compete against her.

In other matches, American qualifier Katie Volynets caused an upset by defeating her compatriot and former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Croatia's Donna Vekic emerged as the winner in a hard-fought match against the powerful Czech player Karolina Pliskova, with a final score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Additionally, Sloane Stephens emerged victorious against Angelique Kerber.
