Naomi Osaka wins first title since maternity comeback at Saint-Malo WTA 125

Naomi Osaka marked a triumphant return to title-winning form by capturing the WTA 125 trophy at the L'Open 35 de Saint-Malo, defeating Slovenia's Kaja Juvan 6-1, 7-5 in a straight-sets final on clay.
This victory is Osaka's first tournament win since the 2021 Australian Open and her first WTA title since becoming a mother in July 2023, signaling a powerful resurgence from the former World No. 1.
Osaka Conquers Clay – A Surface She Once Dreaded
In what many viewed as a surprise win, the 27-year-old Japanese star dominated the match’s opening set before surviving a tight second to seal the title. Known more for her prowess on hard courts, Osaka embraced the irony of her success on clay — historically her most challenging surface.
“Kinda ironic to win my first trophy back on the surface I thought was my worst. That’s one of my favorite things about life though — there’s always room to grow and evolve,” Osaka wrote on X.
Emotional Milestone in Her Comeback Journey
Osaka’s victory in Saint-Malo marks a major milestone in her return to professional tennis after maternity leave. Since welcoming her daughter in July 2023, Osaka has faced tough competition and early exits, including a second-round loss at multiple Grand Slams last season.
But with renewed confidence and momentum, she reached the third round at the Australian Open in January and now adds another trophy to her impressive résumé — a total of eight WTA titles including four Grand Slams.
“Winning a trophy on a surface I used to struggle with is kind of funny. I’m thankful for everyone who’s been with me on this journey. It’s been turbulent, but incredible too,” she said post-match.
