Napoli 1-1 Udinese: League leaders held to draw by visitors

Following a streak of seven consecutive victories in Serie A, Napoli has now encountered difficulties, failing to secure a win in their last two matches after a 1-1 draw against Udinese. This result marked Udinese's first successful avoidance of defeat at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona since 2013.

Despite not capitalizing on Inter's draw the previous weekend, Napoli was aware that a victory in this match could temporarily extend their lead at the top of Serie A to six points.

Although Udinese had suffered losses in their last ten league visits to Naples, they displayed considerable energy from the outset, particularly through their captain Florian Thauvin, whose powerful shot tested the goalkeeper Alex Meret.

Napoli responded with a brief offensive push, as Scott McTominay and Matteo Politano both managed to direct shots on target. However, Udinese's attack remained fluid, with their leading scorer Lorenzo Lucca narrowly missing the target.

The momentum shifted back to Napoli, who were effectively advancing down the flanks with the efforts of Pasquale Mazzochi and Giovanni Di Lorenzo. Politano's shot went across the goal, but the hosts eventually broke the stalemate eight minutes before halftime.

A corner taken by Politano allowed McTominay to rise above Thomas Kristensen, delivering a powerful header from close range to score.

However, just three minutes later, Napoli's lead was sensationally equalized when Jurgen Ekkelenkamp struck a dipping shot into the far corner from the right flank, marking a remarkable first Serie A goal for the Dutchman.

The first half had been exhilarating, but Napoli took some time to match that intensity in the second half. Oumar Solet proved to be a formidable presence in defense for the visitors, frequently regaining possession and initiating threatening counterattacks, including a long-range effort from Sandi Lovrić that found the target.

As the final 20 minutes approached, Napoli gained complete control over possession and territory; however, they struggled to penetrate the formidable partnership of Solet and Jaka Bijol at the heart of the Udinese defense.

The home team ultimately lost their momentum and failed to secure a late victory on a night where they were arguably outperformed.

Udinese has not taken a point from their last ten league visits to Naples, but their performance tonight was commendable as they successfully thwarted the efforts of the 2022/23 Scudetto champions.

Napoli's failure to secure three points mirrored their previous match last Sunday, and their lead at the top of the table could potentially shrink to just one point, contingent upon Inter's performance on Monday.
