Napoli 2-1 Fiorentina: Partenopei edge past La Viola to boost title hopes

Napoli's aspirations for the Serie A title received a significant uplift following a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina, marking their first league double against this opponent since the 2020/21 season.

After enduring a five-match winless streak, Napoli had lost their earlier advantage in the Serie A title race, making this encounter with Fiorentina feel imperative.

With Antonio Conte experiencing his longest winless stretch in Europe's top five leagues, it was expected that the home side would come out aggressively in search of redemption.

They nearly took the lead when Giovanni Di Lorenzo delivered a cross to the unmarked Giacomo Raspadori in the box; however, Raspadori's weak attempt went directly to David de Gea.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper was called into action again midway through the first half, where he managed to parry a powerful shot from Scott McTominay into the path of Romelu Lukaku, who easily scored into an unguarded net.

As the first half drew to a close, De Gea showcased his skills by denying both Leonardo Spinazzola and Raspadori, though he was fortunate not to concede just before halftime when Di Lorenzo's shot struck the crossbar.

After the break, De Gea continued to be a crucial figure, thwarting Raspadori at the near post, yet it became increasingly apparent that a second goal was imminent.

That goal arrived just before the hour mark, with Raspadori capitalizing on Lukaku's clever pass to send a precise shot past a stranded De Gea.

Throughout the match, Fiorentina had shown little indication of mounting a comeback, but they unexpectedly conjured a goal when Moise Kean's clever flick set up Albert Guðmundsson, who unleashed a powerful shot from 25 yards out.

The conclusion of the match created a tense atmosphere for the home team; however, they were not significantly challenged, as a long-range attempt from Kean, measuring 30 yards, went high and wide, reflecting the difficulties the visitors encountered throughout the match.

Conte's squad managed to secure their first victory since January without facing substantial threats, although the final score could have been more decisive, as Giovanni Simeone squandered a clear one-on-one opportunity during stoppage time.

On the other hand, Fiorentina failed to capitalize on the opportunity to achieve back-to-back Serie A away victories against Napoli for the first time since October 1995.
