NBA investigating Ja Morant's finger gun gesture during Grizzlies vs. Warriors game

The NBA is looking into a gesture made by Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant that appeared to resemble firing a gun, according to an ESPN report on Wednesday.

During Tuesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors, Morant extended his left arm and used a finger gun motion while taunting opposing players. The incident occurred after Golden State’s Jimmy Butler made a free throw, increasing his team's lead to 132-125 with 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter. As Memphis called a timeout, Morant made the gesture while players headed to their respective benches. Warriors forward Draymond Green seemingly addressed an official following Morant’s action.

Before Butler’s free throw, Warriors guard Buddy Hield had made a similar gesture from the bench. Both Morant and Hield were assessed technical fouls for their actions. Golden State secured a 134-125 victory.

Morant, 25, has previously faced disciplinary action from the NBA for displaying a handgun on social media. The league suspended him for eight games in March 2023 after he was seen brandishing a firearm in an Instagram Live video. A separate video later surfaced, prompting the NBA to conduct an investigation that led to a 25-game suspension at the start of the 2023-24 season.
