NBA Recap: Thunder Dominate as They Defeat Jokic's Nuggets in Season Opener

The Oklahoma City Thunder commenced their NBA season with an impressive 102-87 triumph over the Denver Nuggets, bolstered by standout performances from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who scored 26 points, and Chet Holmgren, who contributed 22 points. This match took place in Denver on Thursday.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished as the runner-up to Nikola Jokic in the Most Valuable Player voting last season, recorded 28 points, while Holmgren achieved a career-high with 25 points, alongside 14 rebounds, four blocks, and two steals. The Thunder established a commanding lead, reaching a margin of 20 points at one stage.

Despite Jokic's triple-double performance, which included 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists, the Nuggets struggled offensively, managing only 35.4 percent shooting from the field and converting just 15 of 54 attempts in the second half.

Both Oklahoma City and Denver concluded the previous season with identical 57-25 records, with the Thunder securing the top seed in the Western Conference based on a tiebreaker, although they were eliminated by Dallas in the Conference semi-finals.

Holmgren showcased his defensive prowess by blocking a shot from Jokic in the third quarter before racing down the court for a dunk. "I am focused on executing and contributing to winning plays," Holmgren remarked. "We managed to put together enough successful plays tonight to secure the victory."

In other news, Klay Thompson made a notable debut for the Dallas Mavericks, scoring 22 points and helping the reigning Western Conference champions to a 120-109 win against the San Antonio Spurs.

Luka Doncic also had a strong performance, tallying 28 points and 10 rebounds. The Mavericks, who were defeated by the Boston Celtics in last season's NBA Finals, acquired Thompson during the off-season in hopes of advancing further this year. Thompson expressed his excitement about his first game with the Mavericks.

Thompson expressed his satisfaction with the beginning of the season during an interview with broadcaster TNT, stating, "I couldn't have asked for a better start. Sharing the court with (Kyrie Irving), Luka, and the rest of the team is truly special, especially after a challenging month of diligent effort." He further remarked, "However, this is merely a small step towards our ultimate goals."

In San Antonio, star player Victor Wembanyama, who is looking to build on his Rookie of the Year performance from last season, struggled with his shooting, making only five of his 18 attempts from the field and finishing with 17 points. The Spurs also faced difficulties, committing 19 turnovers that resulted in 17 points for the Mavericks.

Chris Paul, an 11-time All-Star point guard brought in to provide veteran leadership to the young San Antonio team, managed to score solely through a single three-pointer, concluding the game with one successful shot out of six attempts, along with eight assists.

In another matchup, the reigning champion Boston Celtics, following a dominant season opener against the New York Knicks, encountered a sluggish start against the Washington team, which had the second-worst record last season.

Washington initially led by as many as eight points. The score was tied at 51-51 with five minutes remaining in the second quarter, but Boston finished the first half with a 13-3 run, ultimately securing a 122-102 victory.

Jaylen Brown marked his 28th birthday by scoring 27 points, while Jayson Tatum contributed 25 points and 11 rebounds. Derrick White added 19 points for Boston. Brown commented, "This was our first road game... we started off a bit slowly, but we maintained our focus and were able to secure the win."
