NBA roundup: Brown shines as Boston Celtics snap losing streak against Indiana Pacers

Jaylen Brown (28) showcased an impressive performance, scoring 44 points as the NBA champion Boston Celtics ended a two-game losing streak with a decisive 142-105 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Friday.

Brown established an early lead by contributing 15 points in the first quarter, during which the Celtics outscored the Pacers 39-22, asserting their dominance.

He was instrumental in the Celtics' success, hitting six of their 23 three-pointers and recording four steals, marking his highest scoring game since he netted 50 points in a win against Orlando in January 2022.

"Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla praised Brown, stating, 'He was big-time,' as Brown energized the TD Garden crowd with a series of powerful dunks.

"He possesses the capability to influence both a team and the atmosphere with his energy and physical presence.

"When he enters a specific zone, he becomes intensely focused, which was evident on both ends of the court."

Jayson Tatum contributed 22 points and secured 13 rebounds, while Payton Pritchard added 18 points, eight rebounds, and 10 assists off the bench for the Celtics, who managed to secure their highest point total of the season despite the absence of Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday.

For the Pacers, Tyrese Haliburton scored 19 points, and Bennedict Mathurin added 18, while the team missed injured players Obi Toppin and Andrew Nembhard.

This commanding victory against the team they defeated in last season's Eastern Conference finals allowed the Celtics to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the season.

Additionally, it kept them competitive with the Eastern Conference leaders, the Cleveland Cavaliers, who improved their league-best record to 27-4 following a 149-135 win over the Denver Nuggets.

Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 33 points, contributing to a total of six players scoring in double figures as Cleveland secured their sixth consecutive victory and their 10th in 11 games.

The Cavaliers made 23 three-pointers and held a lead of as much as 21 points, successfully countering a triple-double performance from Denver's NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic, who recorded 27 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 assists.

Edwards Secures Timberwolves Victory

In a thrilling conclusion in Houston, Anthony Edwards of Minnesota sank a step-back three-pointer with 23.2 seconds left, propelling the Timberwolves to a narrow 113-112 triumph over the Rockets.

Fred VanVleet had an opportunity to clinch the game for Houston but failed to convert a three-pointer with just 1.8 seconds remaining.

Julius Randle led the Timberwolves with 27 points, while Edwards contributed 24, helping the team overcome a 16-point deficit, trailing 106-90 with 4:57 on the clock.

"Made it happen!" Edwards remarked. "We secured some crucial stops and hit significant shots, including the decisive one at the end."

Alperen Sengun was the standout for the Rockets, scoring 38 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Amen Thompson added 20 points, as all five Houston starters reached double figures, yet they fell short in the final moments.

Meanwhile, the New York Knicks extended their winning streak to six games with a dominant 108-85 victory over the Magic in Orlando.

Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 26 points and nine assists, while Josh Hart contributed 23 points and 13 rebounds. Despite making only four of their 15 three-point attempts, the Knicks were effective at the free-throw line, converting 24 of 34 attempts.

The Magic, missing key players Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Moritz Wagner due to injuries, were led by Jalen Suggs, who scored 27 points.

In another matchup, San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama recorded 19 points and seven rebounds as the Spurs rallied in the second half to defeat the Nets 96-87 in Brooklyn.

After a sluggish first half where they made only 11 of 40 shots and were tied at 41-41, the Spurs surged in the third quarter, hitting 13 of 18 attempts. Wembanyama was particularly effective, making four of five shots, including three three-pointers, allowing the Spurs to take a 74-62 lead into the final quarter.
