NBA roundup: Brunson takes over late in Knicks victory; Thunder and Bulls secure wins

Jalen Brunson showcased an extraordinary performance, scoring 55 points as the New York Knicks overcame a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter to secure a 136-132 victory over the Washington Wizards in overtime on Saturday.

Brunson tallied 42 of his points during the second half and overtime, playing a crucial role in the Knicks' seventh consecutive win in the NBA against a struggling Wizards team missing Kyle Kuzma and leading scorer Jordan Poole.

This marked Brunson's third game with 50 or more points as a member of the Knicks, and his contributions were essential against a Washington squad that had led by as many as 11 points in the third quarter and held an eight-point advantage entering the final period.

The Wizards extended their lead to 100-90 early in the fourth quarter, and after several lead changes, they found themselves ahead 119-114 with just over a minute left. Brunson responded with a three-point play and subsequently tied the game at 119-119 with another driving layup, forcing the match into overtime. In the extra period, Brunson and Josh Hart each made two critical free throws to secure the win.

"We were a step behind until the fourth," Brunson remarked. "(We) found a way to turn it up and came out with the win."

Brunson achieved an impressive shooting performance, hitting 18 of 31 attempts from the field and contributing three of the Knicks' ten three-pointers.

"I read the game, and then I find a way to impact it," he stated. "Tonight it was scoring."

He expressed satisfaction with his free-throw shooting, making 16 of 17 attempts, including five of six in overtime. "It's great, knowing I haven't made a bunch of free throws this year, I've been terrible. But I made it when it was needed," Brunson added.

In other league action, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 22 points, while Jalen Williams contributed 20 for the Oklahoma City Thunder, who lead the Western Conference, in a decisive 106-94 win over the Hornets in Charlotte. This victory marked the Thunder's tenth consecutive regular-season win, a streak interrupted only by a loss to Milwaukee in the NBA Cup final, which did not affect the season standings.

The Thunder maintained a commanding lead throughout the game against the injury-plagued Hornets, achieving a total of 29 assists in a comprehensive offensive performance.

Aaron Wiggins, stepping in for the injured Luguentz Dort, contributed 17 points to the Thunder's effort, which improved their record to 25-5.

In Chicago, Josh Giddey led the Bulls to a 116-111 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, scoring 23 points while also securing 15 rebounds and providing 10 assists. The Bucks were missing their star player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, due to illness.

Nikola Vucevic supported the Bulls with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Coby White added 22 points.

For the Bucks, Damian Lillard, who was also listed as questionable due to illness, managed to score 29 points and distribute 11 assists.

Lakers triumph without LeBron
The Los Angeles Lakers, missing star LeBron James due to illness, secured a 132-122 victory over the Sacramento Kings, propelled by Anthony Davis's 36 points.

Davis also recorded 15 rebounds and eight assists, while Austin Reaves contributed 26 points and 16 assists for the Lakers.

De'Aaron Fox led the Kings with 29 points and 12 assists in their first game following the dismissal of head coach Mike Brown.

Doug Christie, who was appointed as the interim head coach, oversaw the team's sixth consecutive loss.

In San Francisco, Jonathan Kuminga equaled his career high with 34 points and made three free throws in the final 29 seconds, aiding the Golden State Warriors in a narrow 109-105 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Despite a challenging night, Dennis Schroder hit a crucial three-pointer with 1:23 left, forced a turnover, and converted two vital free throws for the Warriors, who ended a three-game losing streak.

Stephen Curry contributed 22 points, while Draymond Green and Trayce Jackson-Davis each added 16 points for Golden State. Kevin Durant led the Suns with 31 points.

In Denver, Nikola Jokic recorded 37 points while Jamal Murray contributed 34, enabling the Nuggets to withstand a late-game rally from the Pistons and secure a 134-121 victory.

In Portland, Shaedon Sharpe led the Trail Blazers with 23 points, helping six of his teammates achieve double-digit scoring in a narrow 126-122 win over the Dallas Mavericks.

Kyrie Irving netted 46 points for Dallas, who were once again missing their injured star Luka Doncic, along with Naji Marshall and P.J. Washington, both of whom were suspended due to their involvement in an on-court altercation during Friday's matchup against the Suns.
