NBA roundup: Celtics hold off Bucks for seventh straight win

On Wednesday, the Boston Celtics emerged victorious in their highly anticipated Eastern Conference clash against the Milwaukee Bucks, with Jayson Tatum leading the charge by scoring an impressive 31 points. Despite a late surge from the Bucks, the Celtics managed to hold them off and secure a 122-119 win.

Boston appeared to be on track for their seventh consecutive win as they dominated Milwaukee for large portions of the game at the TD Garden. Taking advantage of the absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Celtics built a 21-point lead in the late stages of the third quarter, after the Bucks had closed the gap to just five points shortly after halftime.

However, Milwaukee staged a remarkable comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Celtics 36-21 and setting up a tense finish. Despite the shaky final quarter, Boston managed to secure a narrow victory.

Acknowledging the team's shortcomings, Tatum admitted, "It was not a pretty performance in the fourth quarter, and they went on a run. No lead is safe in the NBA. Nevertheless, a win is a win and we will gladly accept it."

With this win, Boston's record improved to 55-14, placing them a comfortable 11 games ahead of the second-placed Bucks. The Celtics now only require three more victories to secure the top seed and home-court advantage in the playoffs.

Even with their fourth-quarter struggles, it is difficult to discount the Celtics' chances of reaching the NBA Finals in June. Their well-rounded offense was once again on display, further solidifying their status as a formidable team.

Five players from the Boston team achieved double-digit points, with Derrick White leading the way with 23 points, followed by Jaylen Brown with 21 points and Kristaps Porzingis with 17 points. Payton Pritchard also contributed 19 points coming off the bench.

According to Tatum, the team is incredibly well-rounded. He mentioned in an interview with ESPN that they have been performing exceptionally well throughout the season, but they still have a lot of progress to make.

Tatum expressed his satisfaction with the team's current trajectory, emphasizing their focus on continuous improvement every day. He also mentioned that they are not looking ahead to the playoffs, but rather maintaining a mindset centered on their upcoming game against Detroit on Friday.

In the absence of Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee faced a tough challenge, but Damian Lillard stepped up and led the team with 32 points. Bobby Portis also made a significant contribution off the bench, adding 24 points.

In other games on Wednesday, Kevin Durant surpassed Shaquille O'Neal to claim the eighth spot on the NBA's all-time scoring list. Durant's jump shot in the third quarter propelled him past the legendary Lakers player, as the Phoenix Suns secured a 115-102 victory against the Philadelphia 76ers.

O'Neal expressed his admiration for Durant, stating, "You truly deserve it." He also acknowledged that Durant's success is not limited to this moment, as he believed that if anyone was going to surpass his own achievements, it would undoubtedly be Durant.

Durant had a solid performance, contributing 22 points, while Grayson Allen stood out for the Suns, leading their scoring with an impressive 32 points, including nine successful three-pointers.

Meanwhile, in San Francisco, the Golden State Warriors rebounded from their previous loss to the New York Knicks by delivering a resounding 137-116 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

With this win, the Warriors' record improved to 36-32, securing their position as the 10th-ranked team in the Western Conference.

In Cleveland, the Miami Heat staged a thrilling comeback to narrowly defeat the Cavaliers 107-104.

Although Miami held the lead for most of the game, Cleveland managed to take a four-point advantage with just one minute and 34 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

However, Terry Rozier of the Heat stepped up in the final moments, scoring nine crucial points, including a pivotal 26-foot three-pointer with only 15 seconds left on the clock. This shot not only restored Miami's lead but also ensured their victory.

Rozier finished the game with 24 points, while Jimmy Butler led Miami's scorers with an impressive 30 points.

Rozier emphasized the significance of securing the win, stating, "The win is the utmost priority. My teammates and coaches consistently remind me to stay true to myself, and I am grateful for that. It's a great feeling to come out victorious."

Following their triumph, Miami's record now stands at 38-31, placing them in seventh position in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, Cleveland maintains their third-place position in the standings with a record of 43-26.

In other games, the Sacramento Kings comfortably defeated the Toronto Raptors with a score of 123-89, while the Indiana Pacers dominated the Detroit Pistons with a final score of 122-103.

The Oklahoma City Thunder, leaders of the Western Conference, had a smooth victory over the Utah Jazz, finishing with a score of 119-107. Chet Holmgren and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander showcased their skills, combining for an impressive 66 points.
