NBA roundup: Celtics make history at home by downing Wolves in overtime

On Wednesday, Jayson Tatum showcased his exceptional skills by scoring an impressive 45 points, with 12 of those coming in overtime, leading the Boston Celtics to a 127-120 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
This victory allowed the Celtics to maintain their flawless home record of 18-0. Jaylen Brown also contributed significantly to the team's success, adding 35 points and 11 rebounds.
The Celtics' remarkable achievement of consecutive home victories at the beginning of a season surpassed the previous record set by the 1957-58 team.
It is worth noting that the Timberwolves have struggled to secure a win in Boston since the 2004-05 season. In the thrilling overtime period, Tatum's layup with 1:04 remaining gave the Celtics a crucial 122-120 lead, which he further extended by sinking a three-pointer with only 51 seconds left on the clock.
To seal the victory, Tatum confidently made two free throws with just 12.7 seconds remaining. On the opposing side, Anthony Edwards displayed his scoring prowess with 29 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 25 points and 13 rebounds.
Additionally, Naz Reid made a notable impact with 19 points and 10 rebounds. In a separate game, Victor Wembanyama achieved the second-fastest triple-double in NBA history, leading San Antonio to a convincing victory over the Detroit Pistons.
In just 21 minutes of play, Wembanyama achieved his first NBA triple-double, accumulating 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. This impressive feat is reminiscent of Russell Westbrook's triple-double in 20 minutes back in 2014. Additionally, Keldon Johnson contributed 17 points, while Devin Vassell added 16 points, as eight players from the Spurs scored in double figures.
Unfortunately, the Pistons suffered their sixth consecutive loss, bringing their record to 3-35. They have struggled in their past 35 games, losing 34 of them. Compounding their challenges, the Pistons played without their top scorer, Cade Cunningham, who is currently dealing with a strained left knee.
On the other hand, Jalen Johnson played a pivotal role in Atlanta's victory over Philadelphia, scoring 25 points, including seven in overtime. He also achieved a career-high 16 rebounds and seven assists. Johnson's performance helped Atlanta break a two-game losing streak.
During overtime, Johnson made two crucial free throws, tying the game at 132 with 1:07 remaining. He then showcased his skills by stealing the ball and sinking a three-pointer with 40.5 seconds left. Despite Philadelphia initially leading by three points in overtime, they failed to score any further.
Philadelphia faced the absence of their reigning MVP, Joel Embiid, who missed his second consecutive game due to left knee swelling. However, Tyrese Maxey stepped up with an impressive performance, contributing 35 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. Tobias Harris also had a strong showing with 32 points and 10 rebounds.
In Indianapolis, Myles Turner played a significant role in Indiana's victory over Washington, collecting 18 points and 13 rebounds. Despite the absence of their leading scorer, Tyrese Haliburton, who strained his left hamstring in their previous game, seven players from Indiana scored in double digits.
Washington's Jordan Poole led his team with 28 points, while Corey Kispert added 15 points off the bench. Daniel Gafford contributed 12 points and eight rebounds. Unfortunately, the Wizards have been struggling, losing six consecutive games and nine of their past 10.
Sacramento avenged a previous shocking loss by defeating Charlotte, with Keegan Murray scoring 21 of his 25 points in the first half. Domantas Sabonis also had an impressive performance, accumulating 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Malik Monk contributed 20 points off the bench, while De'Aaron Fox added 19 for the Kings, kicking off a successful five-game road trip after a recent victory in Detroit.
Despite the Hornets losing 14 of their last 15 games, their lone win in this stretch was in Sacramento on January 2, with Miles Bridges leading Charlotte with 24 points and Terry Rozier scoring 22.
In a 128-120 victory against the Heat, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander notched 28 points, and Jalen Williams narrowly missed a triple-double for the Thunder, who maintained their hot shooting streak with a 59.3% field goal percentage.
The Bulls secured a 124-119 overtime win against the Rockets, with Coby White scoring 30 points and Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic recording double-doubles. Despite being outscored in the paint, the Bulls connected on 19 three-pointers, sealing their third consecutive victory.
Herbert Jones led a 3-point barrage, and Jonas Valanciunas scored 21 points in just 21 minutes as the Pelicans dominated the Warriors with a 141-105 victory in San Francisco, following their impressive win against the Kings.
The Golden State Warriors witnessed Moses Moody's impressive performance as he scored 21 points coming off the bench.
Despite the support from their home fans, the Warriors faced their fifth loss during a challenging seven-game homestand.
