NBA roundup: Celtics overwhelm Warriors while Clippers edge Timberwolves

The Boston Celtics, currently leading the NBA, showcased an extraordinary and momentous display as they dominated the Golden State Warriors with a resounding 140-88 victory on Sunday. This remarkable triumph extended the Celtics' winning streak to an impressive 11 games.

Boston's Jaylen Brown scored 25 of his 29 points in a record-breaking first half, while Jayson Tatum marked his 26th birthday with 22 of his 27 points in the first two quarters of dominance.

"It's definitely up there. A great birthday. I got to do what I love in front of the best fans in the world and secure a win," Tatum expressed.

The Celtics made history by becoming the first team in NBA history to win three games in a single season by 50 or more points. They defeated Indiana 155-104 in November and crushed Brooklyn 136-86 last month, both victories coming at home.

Despite the absence of Latvian center Kristaps Porzingis due to a left quad bruise, the Celtics took an 82-38 lead after the second quarter, their largest half-time advantage in team history and the Warriors' biggest half-time deficit ever.

"It was a lot of fun," Derrick White of Boston commented. "It was a strong start. You never anticipate something like that happening."

Boston hit 10 3-pointers in the first quarter, their highest in any quarter this season, and ended the period with a 23-1 run over six minutes to take control with a 44-22 lead.

The Warriors struggled, shooting 34.9% (15-of-43) in the first half, 3-of-18 from beyond the arc, and committing eight turnovers. In contrast, the Celtics shot 60% (30-of-50) in the first half, 15-of-24 from 3-point range, and only had one turnover.

Key players saw limited action in the second half. Boston extended their lead to 115-62 after three quarters, and the reserves comfortably closed out the game as the Celtics improved to 29-3 at home this season.

The Eastern Conference leaders, Boston, now hold the best record in the league at 48-12, while the Golden State Warriors dropped to 32-28, placing ninth in the Western Conference.

"We have a lot of experience. We've grown, we've matured," Brown stated. "We're ready and we're prepared.

"While we have a lot of respect for the Golden State Warriors, we believe it's our time now."

The Minnesota Timberwolves (42-19) relinquished their position at the top of the Western Conference standings after suffering a narrow 89-88 defeat at home to the Los Angeles Clippers. Kawhi Leonard's two successful free throws with just 13 seconds remaining gave the Clippers an 89-86 lead. Despite Anthony Edwards' impressive dunk with three seconds left on the clock, the T-Wolves were unable to regain possession of the ball, resulting in their loss.

In terms of individual performances, Leonard led the way for the Clippers with an impressive 32 points, while Edwards showcased his skills for Minnesota, leading his team with 27 points.

Meanwhile, the Oklahoma City Thunder (42-18) managed to secure the top spot in the West by defeating the Phoenix Suns 118-110. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the standout performer for Oklahoma City, scoring an impressive 35 points. On the other side, Bradley Beal led the Suns with 31 points, and Jusuf Nurkic made a club-record 31 rebounds for Phoenix.

In another game, despite a remarkable triple-double performance by Luka Doncic, the Dallas Mavericks fell short against the Philadelphia 76ers, losing 120-116. Doncic displayed his skills with 38 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists, but it wasn't enough to secure a victory for the Mavericks.

Tobias Harris led the way for the Sixers with 28 points, supported by Tyrese Maxey with 24 points and Kelly Oubre Jr. with 21 points off the bench. It's worth noting that the Sixers were without their injured reigning NBA MVP, Joel Embiid.

Additionally, the New York Knicks claimed a 107-98 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, thanks to Donte DiVincenzo's 28 points and Josh Hart's impressive triple-double performance of 13 points, 19 rebounds, and 10 assists.

Unfortunately, the Knicks suffered an early setback as Jalen Brunson sustained an injury to his left knee in the opening seconds of the game, further adding to their existing injury concerns, which have already sidelined three key forwards.

Donovan Mitchell was absent for the Cavaliers due to a sore left knee.

French newcomer Victor Wembanyama recorded 31 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and six blocked shots to propel the San Antonio Spurs to a 117-105 victory against the visiting Indiana team.

R.J. Barrett contributed 23 points, with Immanuel Quickley adding 22 points and 11 assists, guiding Toronto to a 111-106 win over Charlotte on their home court.

Orlando secured a 113-91 victory over Detroit with Paolo Banchero leading the way with 29 points.
