NBA roundup: Curry hits 60 but Warriors fall to Hawks in overtime

In a heartbreaking defeat, Stephen Curry's remarkable performance of scoring 60 points went in vain on Saturday. Despite his outstanding efforts, Dejounte Murray emerged as the savior for the Atlanta Hawks in overtime, leading them to a triumphant 141-134 victory over the Golden State Warriors in the NBA.

Curry, a four-time NBA champion, showcased his incredible skills on the court. He made an impressive 22 of 38 shots from the floor, including 10 of 23 from three-point range. In addition, he contributed six rebounds and four assists to help his injury-hit team, the Warriors.

Coach Steve Kerr couldn't help but marvel at Curry's performance, expressing both admiration and sympathy for his star player and the rest of the team who battled hard.

While Curry fell just short of tying the NBA record for three-point attempts in a single game, he did join the late Kobe Bryant as the only players over 35 years old to score 60 or more points in an NBA game.

Meanwhile, in another important matchup, LeBron James led the Los Angeles Lakers to a 113-105 victory against the New York Knicks. James scored 24 points, while Austin Reaves added 22 to contribute to their team's success.

Despite Jalen Brunson's impressive 36-point performance for the Knicks, the Lakers turned up their defensive intensity in the fourth quarter, outscoring their opponents 33-19 during that period.

James explained that their focus on defensive tactics, such as timely doubles, accurate hits, and effective rotations was key to their late-game heroics.

Recognizing Brunson's outstanding performance throughout the season, James and the Lakers aimed to wear him down in the fourth quarter by utilizing various defensive strategies and assigning multiple defenders to guard him. These tactics proved successful in securing the victory.

In the fourth quarter and overtime, Curry displayed his scoring prowess by putting up 22 points and an additional eight points, respectively. It seemed like Golden State would secure the victory when Curry made a jumper, giving them a 123-121 lead with only 14 seconds left in regulation time.

However, Murray of the Atlanta Hawks had other plans. With just 4.1 seconds remaining, he answered back with a shot from 14 feet, forcing the game into overtime. Murray continued his impressive performance by scoring seven consecutive points in the Hawks' 11-0 run at the start of the extra session, ultimately leading his team to triumph.

Atlanta guard Trae Young expressed his satisfaction with the win, acknowledging Curry's outstanding performance in the second half. Young stated, "Steph was on fire in that second half. He was on his way to 50 points or wherever he was heading. In overtime, we managed to make some crucial stops, grab rebounds, and make plays."

Curry, who holds a career-high of 62 points achieved in a January 2021 victory against Portland, went the extra mile to commemorate the game. He took off his jersey, autographed it, and gifted it to actress Lindsay Lohan.

Young led Atlanta's scoring with 35 points, while Murray contributed 19 points. Jalen Johnson recorded 21 points and 13 rebounds, and Onyeka Okongwu provided a valuable contribution off the bench with 22 points and 16 rebounds.

Young praised Murray's clutch performance during the crucial moments of the game, emphasizing the importance of his aggression and ability to score. Young acknowledged Murray's talent and highlighted his significance in the team's success, stating, "We rely on him to be aggressive and make an impact. He brings a lot to our team, and we can't win without his scoring and ability to involve everyone."

In another game, Giannis Antetokounmpo showcased his dominance by scoring an impressive 48 points, leading the Milwaukee Bucks to a 129-117 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Damian Lillard also contributed 30 points for Milwaukee, while Luka Doncic's outstanding performance of 40 points, 11 assists, and nine rebounds couldn't secure a win for Dallas.

Milwaukee's win ensured that Bucks coach Doc Rivers secured the Eastern Conference All-Star coaching position, taking over from Adrian Griffin just eight days ago.

Unfortunately, Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla, despite having a better record, is not eligible for the All-Star spot as he held the position last season.

In a game without NBA MVP Joel Embiid due to a knee injury, the Philadelphia 76ers suffered their fifth loss in six games, falling 136-121 at home to the Brooklyn Nets.

Brooklyn's Cam Thomas led the team with an impressive 40 points, while Mikal Bridges contributed 23 points.

Sacramento's De'Aaron Fox had a standout performance, scoring 41 points to lead the Kings to a 123-115 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

Notably, Domantas Sabonis recorded a triple-double for Sacramento, tallying 13 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists, while Malik Monk added 22 points off the bench.

Cleveland's Donovan Mitchell had a strong showing with 31 points, and Evan Mobley added 28 points, leading the Cavaliers to a convincing 117-101 win against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Spurs' French rookie sensation, Victor Wembanyama, showcased his skills with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
