NBA roundup: Doncic shines in Lakers debut, Cavs rally for big win

Luka Doncic commenced his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers on a victorious note on Monday, making his return from injury and contributing 14 points in a commanding 132-113 victory over the Utah Jazz.
The Slovenian sensation, who was acquired by the Lakers from the Dallas Mavericks earlier this month in a stunning trade, played his first game since sustaining a calf injury in December.
At 25 years of age, Doncic's playing time was restricted to 24 minutes, as Lakers head coach J.J. Redick indicated that the team would exercise caution in managing Doncic's physical condition.
"I heard a lot of noise when I was introduced - it was a special moment," Doncic said afterwards of the reception by the Lakers home crowd.
There was a brief moment of concern in the first quarter when Doncic required treatment for his left calf and briefly exited to the locker room. However, the five-time All-Star returned to the game and left again late in the third quarter with the Lakers comfortably ahead at 93-69.
During his time on the court, Doncic displayed flashes of the exceptional talent that the Lakers anticipate will usher in a new era for the franchise.
He marked his debut points as a Laker with an impressive 26-foot three-pointer in the first quarter and established a strong connection with LeBron James, who concluded the game with 24 points.
With this victory, the Lakers improved their record to 32-19, positioning themselves in fifth place in the Western Conference, while the Jazz fell to 12-40, remaining just above the bottom of the standings.
The Cleveland Cavaliers secured a commanding 128-107 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, despite a remarkable 44-point performance from Anthony Edwards. Edwards, who scored 23 points, showcased his talent with eight three-pointers on 13-of-28 shooting; however, his efforts were insufficient to alter the outcome as Cleveland maintained control throughout the game.
With this win, the Cavaliers improved their record to 43-10, holding a 5.5-game lead over the second-place Boston Celtics, who triumphed 103-85 against the Miami Heat in another matchup on the same day.
Evan Mobley was the standout performer for the Cavaliers, contributing 28 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and four blocks, while six players from Cleveland reached double figures in scoring. Donovan Mitchell added 23 points, and Darius Garland contributed 17.
The Cavaliers established dominance early in the game, launching a 16-0 run right from the start, which allowed them to build a substantial lead that the Timberwolves were unable to recover from.
"We just came out ready to play, that was the main focus tonight," Mobley said. "We just came out with energy, especially on the defensive end."
Celtics 103-85 Heat
In Miami, the defending NBA champion Celtics overcame an early 11-point deficit to secure a victory against the Heat. Jayson Tatum was the standout performer for Boston, contributing 33 points to the team's total. With this win, Boston's record improved to 38-16.
Spurs 131-121 Wizards
In Washington, Victor Wembanyama showcased his skills in preparation for the upcoming All-Star weekend, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 131-121 victory over the Wizards. The French sensation recorded 31 points, 15 rebounds, two steals, and three blocks, while new addition De'Aaron Fox added 30 points to the Spurs' tally.
Bucks 111-125 Warriors
In Milwaukee, Stephen Curry delivered a season-best performance, scoring 38 points as the Golden State Warriors triumphed over the Bucks with a score of 125-111.
Curry made six three-pointers during his impressive outing, while new teammate Jimmy Butler contributed 20 points. For the Bucks, Damian Lillard also scored 38 points, shooting 12-of-20, following his 43-point performance in the previous game against Philadelphia.
Thunder 137-101 Pelicans
The Oklahoma City Thunder, leading the Western Conference, achieved their sixth consecutive victory with a commanding 137-101 win over the New Orleans Pelicans.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the top scorer for Oklahoma City, finishing with 31 points, while Aaron Wiggins added 24 points off the bench. The Thunder now hold a commanding 43-9 record, eight games ahead of second-place Memphis (35-17).
