NBA roundup: Embiid continues dominant run, Nuggets outlast Nets

Joel Embiid overcame an ankle injury to contribute 31 points and secure 10 rebounds on Friday, leading the Philadelphia 76ers to a triumphant 121-111 NBA win against Toronto. This remarkable performance marked his 13th consecutive game with 30 points and 10 rebounds.

Embiid, the current NBA Most Valuable Player, received significant support from Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris, who both scored 33 points for the 76ers.

In the first quarter, Embiid faced a setback as he twisted his ankle during an awkward landing under the basket, resulting in him scoring only two points.

However, after a short visit to the locker room, he bounced back in the second quarter, contributing 11 points, three rebounds, six assists, and five turnovers.

Meanwhile, Harris played a crucial role in keeping the Sixers competitive by scoring 24 points in the first half. This helped the team secure a 61-58 lead at halftime, despite the Raptors previously holding a 15-point advantage.

Embiid truly came alive in the third period, going on a scoring spree and netting 17 consecutive points for the 76ers. During this impressive run, he sprinted for a transition basket off a pass from Maxey and also sank a three-pointer, giving the Sixers a comfortable 90-77 lead.

Despite displaying occasional signs of discomfort, Embiid managed to extend his streak of consecutive 30-point, 10-rebound games, which is now the longest in the NBA since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar achieved 16 straight in the 1971-72 season.

The deficit was narrowed to three points in the third quarter by the Raptors, led by Pascal Siakam's impressive 31-point performance. However, the Sixers managed to regain control and pull away once again.

In addition to Siakam's contribution, Maxey provided 10 assists, while Harris recorded eight rebounds and seven assists, along with his season-high in points. This strong performance from the Sixers resulted in their eighth win in their last nine games.

Philadelphia coach Nick Nurse praised Tobias Harris, acknowledging his skills and versatility on the court. Nurse mentioned that sometimes players have nights where the ball finds them more often, and Harris took full advantage of those opportunities.

Nurse admitted that he expected the Sixers to start the game a bit sluggish, considering their previous victory against the Western Conference leaders, the Minnesota Timberwolves, where Joel Embiid scored an impressive 51 points. However, Nurse emphasized that it wasn't just Embiid who contributed to their success, but the entire team.

As the game progressed, Embiid found his rhythm and started making crucial shots, including jumpers. Nurse acknowledged Embiid's determination and ability to get into his shooting groove.

Looking ahead, Nurse mentioned that the team would monitor Embiid's ankle, especially with a Christmas Day game against the Miami Heat approaching, which marks the start of a four-game road trip. He anticipated some soreness but remained optimistic about Embiid's availability.

Meanwhile, in Brooklyn, the Denver Nuggets, the reigning champions, secured a 122-117 victory against the Nets. Jamal Murray led the Nuggets with 32 points, while Nikola Jokic contributed 31 points and 11 rebounds. Aaron Gordon added 18 points, and Michael Porter Jr. scored 15, helping the Nuggets secure their third consecutive win.

In a thrilling fourth quarter that saw the lead change hands six times, Cam Thomas came through for the Nets with a clutch four-point play, bringing them within one point at 115-114 with just 19.4 seconds left on the clock.

However, the Nuggets' Jamal Murray responded by sinking three crucial free throws, extending Denver's lead and ultimately securing the victory.

Thomas was the top scorer for the Nets, contributing 23 points to the team's effort. Cameron Johnson also had a strong performance, adding 17 points as seven Brooklyn players reached double figures in scoring.

Meanwhile, in Miami, Tyler Herro had a standout game, putting up an impressive 30 points. Duncan Robinson also made a significant impact off the bench, scoring 21 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, propelling the Heat to a 122-113 win over the Atlanta Hawks.

Despite trailing by 11 points early in the third quarter, the Heat managed to withstand a stellar performance from Atlanta's Trae Young, who recorded a double-double with 30 points and 13 assists. This marked Young's sixth consecutive game with at least 30 points and 10 assists.

In other games, the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings both secured convincing victories on their home courts.

Warriors' star Stephen Curry had a remarkable game, sinking a season-high eight three-pointers on his way to scoring 30 points. He sat out the entire fourth quarter as the Warriors cruised to a 129-118 win over the Washington Wizards, who featured former Warrior Jordan Poole.

Meanwhile, the Kings' Domantas Sabonis recorded his fourth triple-double of the season, tallying 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists. His outstanding performance helped lead the Kings to a 120-105 victory over the Phoenix Suns, who were led by Kevin Durant's 28 points.

In the Rockets' dominant 122-96 victory over the injury-plagued Dallas Mavericks, Alperen Sengun of Houston showcased his skills by contributing 22 points and securing an impressive 15 rebounds. Unfortunately for the Mavs, they were missing key players such as Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, Dereck Lively, Dante Exum, Josh Green, and Maxi Kleber.
