NBA roundup: Gilgeous-Alexander drops 40 as Thunder defeat Nuggets, Cavs extend win streak to 14 games

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander showcased his prowess by outshining MVP contender Nikola Jokic with a remarkable 40-point performance, leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to a decisive 127-103 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.
The intense clash between two titans of the NBA Western Conference was ultimately determined by a dominant offensive display from Oklahoma City in the fourth quarter, where they outscored Denver 41-20, securing a comfortable win.
Gilgeous-Alexander, often regarded as the leading candidate to take over the MVP title from Jokic, played a crucial role in the Thunder's impressive conclusion to the game.
The talented Canadian point guard once again delivered in critical moments, effectively sealing the game against Denver after the Nuggets had narrowed the gap to just one point at the beginning of the fourth quarter, having fought back from an 11-point deficit in the third.
In the final quarter, Gilgeous-Alexander contributed nine points, marking his 11th 40-point game of the season and bringing the Thunder closer to securing a playoff berth.
With this victory, the Thunder improved to 53-11, maintaining their position at the top of the Western Conference, now 12 games ahead of the second-placed Los Angeles Lakers, and extending their winning streak to seven games.
"We were able to get stops down the stretch and then just execute," Gilgeous-Alexander said of the Thunder's fourth-quarter bombardment.
"That's what it's going to come down to when teams are so good. It's never going to be pretty all the time but if you get stops and execute you'll give yourself a chance no matter who you play."
Gilgeous-Alexander's impressive 40-point performance is noteworthy, particularly considering he converted only two of his eleven attempts from beyond the arc. Nevertheless, the 26-year-old overcame his difficulties with long-range shooting by aggressively driving to the basket, ensuring a steady stream of points for Oklahoma City.
"That's where it all starts - easy baskets," Gilgeous-Alexander told ESPN.
"That's my comfort zone. I didn't make as many shots as I wanted to, but we got a dub (win) so I don't care."
Gilgeous-Alexander, on the other hand, dismissed the excitement surrounding his matchup with the current MVP, Jokic. The Serbian player entered the game following an impressive performance, having recorded a historic triple-double of 31 points, 21 rebounds, and 22 assists in the previous victory against the Phoenix Suns.
"I love MVPs, I love All-Stars, I love all the things that come with it but none of it matters if you don't win," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "That's where I hang my hat."
Gilgeous-Alexander was bolstered by Jalen Williams, who contributed 26 points, while Chet Holmgren added 14 points to the team's total. On the opposing side, Jokic concluded the game with 24 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists, while Michael Porter Jr. also scored 24 points.
In other matchups on Sunday, the Cleveland Cavaliers, leaders of the Eastern Conference, secured their 14th consecutive victory with a confident 112-100 win against the Milwaukee Bucks on the road.
All five starters for the Cavaliers scored in double digits, with Max Strus leading the team with 17 points.
Cleveland, having clinched a playoff spot last week, holds an eight-game lead over the second-place Boston Celtics, who achieved an impressive victory over the Lakers on Saturday.
"We haven't accomplished anything yet; we must ensure that we perform well when April arrives," stated Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell as the team prepares for the postseason.
In Dallas, the Phoenix Suns triumphed over the Dallas Mavericks with a score of 125-116, thanks to Devin Booker's 24 points and Kevin Durant's 21 points, a vital win that enhances their prospects of qualifying for the play-in tournament.
The Mavericks currently occupy the 10th and final spot for play-in qualification with a record of 32-33, while the Suns are just outside in 11th place at 30-34.
The Minnesota Timberwolves improved their record to 37-29 with a commanding 141-124 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, keeping them in close pursuit of the Golden State Warriors in the race for playoff positions in the Western Conference. The Timberwolves are currently seventh, trailing the sixth-placed Warriors, who hold a record of 36-26.
In New Orleans, Ja Morant and Desmond Bane combined for 62 points, leading the Memphis Grizzlies to a thrilling 107-104 victory over the Pelicans, who had a 14-point lead in the second
