NBA roundup: Heat destroy Lakers, Pelicans upset Wolves

Williamson, the power forward for the Pelicans, led the scoring with 27 points, while McCollum contributed 24 points, resulting in an impressive victory for New Orleans on the road.
McCollum's total included four successful three-pointers, and both Brandon Ingram (19 points) and Herbert Jones (16 points) made valuable contributions to the team's success.
Jones' 16 points consisted of four three-pointers out of five attempts. On the other hand, Anthony Edwards led the scoring for Minnesota with 35 points.
This defeat for Minnesota comes just two days after their loss to the New York Knicks on New Year's Day, marking the first time this season that the Wolves (24-9) have experienced consecutive losses.
Meanwhile, the Pelicans' fourth consecutive win places them in fifth position in the Western Conference, as they aim to make a return to the playoffs this year after missing out in the 2022-2023 season.
Pelicans coach Willie Green expressed his admiration for the opposing team, stating, "They're a truly exceptional team, excelling in both defense and offense. Therefore, securing a victory against a talented and well-coached team like Minnesota is a significant achievement for us."
Overall, it was a well-fought and satisfying victory for the Pelicans.
In a different matchup, the Los Angeles Lakers suffered their third consecutive loss as they were defeated 110-96 by the Miami Heat.
LeBron James had an unusual off-night, only managing to score 12 points while shooting six-of-18 from the field. It was Anthony Davis who stepped up for the Lakers, leading the team with 29 points.
From the beginning of the game, Miami took the lead in the first quarter and maintained their advantage throughout. The Heat displayed a well-rounded offensive performance, with eight players reaching double figures.
The Lakers were left disappointed by their inability to convert from beyond the arc, making only four of their 30 attempts from three-point range.
Meanwhile, in Indianapolis, the Indiana Pacers secured another victory in their ongoing rivalry with the Milwaukee Bucks, winning 142-130. This marked back-to-back wins for the Pacers against the reigning NBA champions.
Point guard Tyrese Haliburton led the scoring for the Pacers with an impressive 31 points. Seven players from Indiana achieved double-digit scores, contributing to their success. The Pacers trailed by two points at halftime but took control of the game with a remarkable 47-point third quarter.
Haliburton expressed his joy in winning and emphasized the importance of maintaining a high level of competition. He believed that if they continued to take good shots, positive outcomes would follow.
According to Haliburton, the Pacers' defensive improvements were the key to their dominant third quarter performance. Their ability to get stops allowed them to establish a 16-point lead heading into the final quarter.
"We had to focus on our defense – we have been scoring well against them all season, so we needed to find a way to get some stops, and we were able to accomplish that in the second half," Haliburton explained.
Recent clashes between the two teams have witnessed emotions running high, and tensions reached a boiling point in the final quarter when Bennedict Mathurin drew a foul from Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, resulting in a scuffle involving multiple players from both sides.
Antetokounmpo led the scoring for the Bucks with 26 points, while Damian Lillard contributed 23 points and Khris Middleton added 19.
Bucks coach Adrian Griffin attributed his team's loss to their high turnover count, totaling 13 throughout the game.
"We had an opportunity, but it's difficult when you keep turning the ball over," Griffin commented.
Meanwhile, in Phoenix, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard combined for an impressive 63 points, leading the Los Angeles Clippers to their fourth consecutive victory with a 131-122 win against the Suns. George finished with 33 points, and Leonard contributed 30.
In Atlanta, Jalen Johnson delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 28 points, while Trae Young added 24 points as the Hawks defeated the in-form Oklahoma City Thunder 141-138.
Oklahoma City arrived in Georgia on the back of a five-game winning streak, which included notable victories against the Boston Celtics and the NBA champion Denver Nuggets.
However, despite an exceptional display from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who recorded 33 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists, the Thunder fell just short as Atlanta secured a wire-to-wire victory.
