NBA roundup: Jamal Murray scores career-high 55 points in Nuggets win, Celtics, Cavs, and Thunder also win

Jamal Murray achieved a career-high of 55 points, while Nikola Jokic contributed a triple-double, leading the Denver Nuggets to extend their NBA winning streak to eight games with a 132-121 triumph over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday.

Murray ensured that the Nuggets entered the All-Star break, commencing on Friday, with momentum, scoring 30 points in the first half and establishing a 75-56 lead against the Trail Blazers.

He eclipsed his previous career-best of 50 points, successfully making 20 of 36 shots, including seven out of 15 from beyond the arc.

Murray's performance ranks as the third-highest scoring game in Nuggets history, following David Thompson's 73-point game in 1978 and Jokic's 56 points in a loss to Washington on December 7.

"Excited to play basketball," remarked Murray, who also recorded four rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Jokic provided significant assistance with 26 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists, marking his 25th triple-double of the season.

Despite the absence of four key players, Murray expressed that the All-Star break would not hinder their momentum but rather serve as an opportunity to "rejuvenate and prepare for what lies ahead."

In Boston, Jayson Tatum scored 32 points and secured 14 rebounds, leading the defending champion Celtics to a 116-103 victory over Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.

With Jaylen Brown sidelined due to a sore right knee, the Celtics maintained their performance, building a lead of up to 24 points and finishing the first half with a 66-47 advantage.

The Spurs made a comeback after halftime, narrowing the gap to eight points early in the fourth quarter before the Celtics regained control.

Kristaps Porzingis contributed 29 points, while Derrick White added 19 for the Celtics, who compensated for their 17 turnovers—resulting in 22 points for the Spurs—by making 18 three-pointers.

"We understand that games like these before the All-Star break can be challenging," Porzingis remarked. "However, it is essential for us to defend our home court."

De'Aaron Fox, who was acquired by the Spurs at the trade deadline, led San Antonio with 23 points. Wembanyama recorded 17 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocked shots.

With this performance, Wembanyama extended his streak to 85 consecutive games with at least one block, surpassing Hakeem Olajuwon for the fifth-longest streak in NBA history.

The Celtics are currently 5.5 games behind the Eastern Conference leaders, the Cleveland Cavaliers, who secured a comfortable 131-108 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 21 points, contributing to a total of seven players scoring in double figures.

In the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder overcame a 21-point deficit to achieve a 115-101 victory against the Miami Heat at home.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 14 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter, during which the Thunder launched a 24-point scoring run, as the Heat struggled with three players sidelined due to a stomach illness.

Brunson Propels Knicks to Victory
In New York, Karl-Anthony Towns delivered an impressive 44-point performance, while Jalen Brunson contributed 36 points, including the decisive basket with 11.3 seconds remaining in overtime, leading the Knicks to a narrow 149-148 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

The Indiana Pacers required overtime to secure a 134-130 win against the struggling Washington Wizards, who hold the league's worst record. Obi Toppin made a significant impact off the bench, scoring 31 points to help the Pacers withstand a remarkable 42-point effort from Jordan Poole of Washington.

The Los Angeles Lakers entered the All-Star break on a disappointing note, suffering a 131-119 defeat to the Utah Jazz, which ended their six-game winning streak. Lauri Markkanen led the Jazz with 32 points, helping them break a three-game losing streak.

Rui Hachimura was the top scorer for the Lakers with 19 points, while LeBron James contributed 18 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. Luka Doncic added 16 points in his second game with the Lakers following his trade from Dallas.

In another matchup, the Mavericks achieved their second victory since Doncic's departure, with Kyrie Irving scoring 42 points in a 111-107 win over the Golden State Warriors. Former Warrior Klay Thompson contributed 17 points against his old team, while Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler added 25 and 21 points, respectively.

The Milwaukee Bucks, playing without both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, managed to secure a narrow 103-101 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Gary Trent Jr. led the Bucks with 21 points off the bench, and Brook Lopez contributed 14 points, including two crucial free throws in the final moments of the game.
