NBA roundup: Jokic leads Nuggets past Timberwolves

On Tuesday, the Denver Nuggets emerged victorious with a score of 115-112 against their Western Conference rivals, the Minnesota Timberwolves, thanks to Nikola Jokic's impressive 35-point performance. Despite a second-half rally by the Timberwolves, the Nuggets managed to hold them off and secure the win.

Denver managed to secure a victory against Minnesota, despite the Timberwolves' impressive comeback.

Serbian star Jokic played a crucial role in guiding Denver to the win after Minnesota erased an 18-point deficit in the second quarter, causing some concern for the reigning NBA champions.

However, Minnesota's hopes of forcing overtime were dashed when Anthony Edwards' last-minute three-point attempt failed to find the mark. With this win,

Denver now occupies the second spot in the Western Conference standings with a record of 48-21.

The Oklahoma City Thunder currently lead the standings at 47-20, while Minnesota remains in contention in third place with a record of 47-22, despite missing key players Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert due to injury.

The Timberwolves made a strong comeback in the third quarter, outscoring Denver 29-17, with Edwards contributing 14 points and finishing the night with a total of 30 points.

However, Denver's defensive adjustments in the fourth quarter slowed down Edwards' scoring rate, allowing the Nuggets to hold on to their lead.

Denver coach Michael Malone acknowledged the challenge of guarding Edwards and implemented a tactical tweak by assigning multiple defenders to disrupt his game.

Kyrie Irving recorded 28 points, while Luka Doncic secured his 18th triple-double of the season, leading the Dallas Mavericks to a 113-107 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in a Texas derby.

With this win, the Mavericks improved their record to 40-29, placing them in seventh position in the Western Conference standings. Although they are just outside the automatic playoff spots, they have shown great determination in the final month of the regular season.

Doncic's impressive performance included 18 points, 16 assists, and 10 rebounds, playing a crucial role in Dallas' consecutive victories.

Despite not playing their best, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd acknowledged the team's effort in grinding out the win.

"While it may not have been the prettiest win, it still counts as a victory," Kidd admitted. "Our defense played a significant role in securing this win for us."

On the other hand, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich attributed his team's loss to their high number of turnovers, despite outperforming the Mavericks in various statistical categories.

"We out-rebounded them, had a better shooting percentage, and even outscored them in the third and fourth quarters. We also had a similar number of assists," Popovich explained. "However, our 16 turnovers ultimately made the difference in the game."

Nevertheless, Popovich expressed optimism about the progress shown by his young team.

"Our primary objective is to improve with each game, both individually and as a team, and they demonstrated that tonight," Popovich stated. "They gave their all and played with a winning mentality. You can't ask for anything more than that."

Pelicans head coach Willie Green expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance, highlighting the strong start in the first half and acknowledging the need to tighten up in the second half.

Green emphasized the importance of all players contributing on both ends of the floor. The Orlando Magic secured their fourth consecutive victory by defeating the Charlotte Hornets 112-92, while the Houston Rockets dominated the Washington Wizards 137-114 behind impressive performances from Jalen Green and Amen Thompson.
