NBA roundup: Lakers hold off Wizards in overtime, Nuggets edge Heat

On Thursday, the Los Angeles Lakers triumphed in another thrilling NBA match, securing a 134-131 victory over the Washington Wizards in overtime. Anthony Davis contributed an impressive 40 points, while LeBron James added 31 points to fuel their team's success.

One day following James' impressive performance of scoring 34 points, with 19 of them in the final quarter, to lead the Lakers to a comeback victory against the Los Angeles Clippers, the team faced another tough challenge against the Wizards, who are currently tied for the worst record in the league.

In overtime, James contributed four crucial points, including a game-tying three-pointer at 131-131. He also assisted Davis for a dunk and sealed the win with a free throw.

With this performance, James, who is already the all-time scoring leader in the league, is now just nine points away from reaching the milestone of 40,000 points in the regular season.

Washington's Jordan Poole scored a season-high 34 points, while Marvin Bagley III added 23 points, but it wasn't enough as they suffered their 13th consecutive loss.

But Lakers coach Darvin Ham commended the young and determined Wizards as a formidable opponent, particularly after their draining victory on Wednesday. Ham acknowledged the pressure the Wizards put on his team and recognized their toughness, especially considering the emotional high from the previous night's game.

However, the Lakers managed to find a way to win by coming together and making critical plays when necessary.

In Denver, although star player Nikola Jokic missed out on his fifth consecutive triple-double, Michael Porter Jr's impressive 30-point performance propelled the Nuggets to a 103-97 victory in a rematch of the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat.

Porter also contributed 11 rebounds to help fill the void left by Jamal Murray, who exited the game in the second quarter due to a sprained ankle. Jokic, on the other hand, recorded 18 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists as the Nuggets thwarted Miami's fourth-quarter comeback attempt.

Despite the Heat's efforts, led by Bam Adebayo with 22 points and Jimmy Butler with 21, they were without key players Tyler Herro, Kevin Love, and Josh Richardson, ending their five-game winning streak.

Meanwhile, Golden State's Stephen Curry found his scoring rhythm once again during the team's 110-99 victory over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. After a scoreless first half in their previous game against the Wizards, Curry recovered with an impressive 31-point performance while also grabbing 11 rebounds.

He credited the electric atmosphere at Madison Square Garden, a venue steeped in NBA history and where he broke the career three-pointers record in 2021, for his resurgence.

Jonathan Kuminga contributed 25 points to the Warriors' victory, as they quickly established a 14-0 lead and maintained control throughout the game.

The Knicks, led by Jalen Brunson's 27 points, made a push to reduce the deficit in the fourth quarter but were unable to gain the upper hand, especially with key players Julius Randle and OG Anunoby sidelined.

Victor Wembanyama, the talented rookie, once again showcased his skills and played a crucial role in helping the San Antonio Spurs break their five-game losing streak. With an impressive performance, Wembanyama scored 28 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and made five blocked shots.

During the fourth quarter, the game witnessed four lead changes. However, with just three-and-a-half minutes remaining, Wembanyama made two crucial three-pointers and executed a significant block on a three-point attempt by Chet Holmgren, a strong contender for the rookie of the year title from Oklahoma City. This pivotal moment allowed the Spurs to secure a victory and pull away from their opponents.

In a post-game interview, Wembanyama attributed their success to their determination and passion, stating, "We're just playing with heart."

On the other side, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the scoring for the Oklahoma City Thunder with 31 points, followed by Jalen Williams with 26 points and Holmgren with 23 points. Unfortunately, this loss pushed the Thunder one game behind the Minnesota Timberwolves for the top spot in the Western Conference.

In a separate game, Giannis Antetokounmpo, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, contributed 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 111-99 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Malik Beasley also played a significant role for the Bucks, scoring 19 points, including five three-pointers. With this win, the Bucks extended their winning streak to four games and completed a season sweep of the Hornets.
