NBA roundup: Lakers losing streak extends to three games, Haliburton stars in Pacers win

The Los Angeles Lakers faced another challenge in their pursuit of the NBA playoffs on Monday, losing 118-106 to the Orlando Magic, who secured their first home win since February.

Despite Luka Doncic contributing 32 points and LeBron James adding 24, the Lakers suffered their third consecutive defeat. With a record of 43-28, they are now tied with the Memphis Grizzlies for fourth place in the Western Conference.

Franz Wagner led the Magic with 32 points, while Paolo Banchero contributed 30, as the team outscored the Lakers 34-18 in the third quarter, taking control of the game.

This loss comes on the heels of a significant defeat to the Chicago Bulls, which marked James's return after a seven-game absence due to a groin injury.

The Lakers had anticipated that the combination of James, Doncic, and a recently recovered Rui Hachimura would propel them through a strong finish in the West. However, Lakers coach JJ Redick noted that his team is currently lacking the defensive intensity that characterized their earlier eight-game winning streak, which had briefly elevated them to second place in the standings.

"We can get back there," Redick said, adding that the injury-enforced lineup changes may have taken a toll. "We look tired. I don't know what contributes to that... we weren't able to sustain our level of intensity that we started the game out with."

The Lakers managed to reduce a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter to just seven with 5:39 left on the clock; however, the Magic, currently ranked eighth in the Eastern Conference, quickly extended their lead once more.

Redick mentioned that the Lakers could benefit from additional practice time to help reintegrate a player who has recently returned.

"We've got to get back into the flow and the rhythm," he said. "It's not just (the returning players) getting back into the flow, but it's the group and how the group functions."

The Denver Nuggets managed to maintain their position in third place in the Western Conference despite a loss to the Bulls, who were propelled by Coby White's impressive 37 points marking his third consecutive game with 35 or more points.

Josh Giddey contributed significantly with 26 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists, while six players from Chicago scored in double digits, enabling the Bulls, currently ninth in the Eastern Conference, to overcome an early 13-point deficit.

Although the Nuggets held a four-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter, they were unable to fend off the Bulls' late-game momentum, particularly in the absence of NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic due to an ankle injury, along with Aaron Gordon.

Meanwhile, the defending champion Boston Celtics secured their sixth consecutive victory with a 113-95 win against the Kings in Sacramento, although the match was overshadowed by an injury to All-Star Jayson Tatum.

Tatum recorded 25 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists before leaving the game in the third quarter after twisting his ankle when landing on the foot of Kings center Domantas Sabonis, who received a flagrant foul for the incident.

Tatum managed to remain in the game long enough to take his free throws before being assisted to the locker room.

The Indiana Pacers secured their fifth consecutive win, defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 119-103, thanks to Tyrese Haliburton's impressive performance of 24 points and 11 assists.

Obi Toppin contributed significantly with six three-pointers, totaling 20 points for the Pacers, who maintained a two-game lead over the Milwaukee Bucks for fourth place in the Eastern Conference after the Bucks lost 108-106 to the Suns in Phoenix.

Naz Reid led the Timberwolves with 20 points off the bench. Currently, the Timberwolves sit in eighth place in the Western Conference, just one game away from sixth place, which would allow them to bypass the play-in tournament.

Devin Booker emerged as the standout player for the Suns, hitting a step-back shot with 2.4 seconds left to secure the victory in a match that saw 15 lead changes, including six in the final quarter.

Kevin Durant was the top scorer for Phoenix, finishing with 38 points, while Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 31 points.

In Brooklyn, the Dallas Mavericks celebrated Anthony Davis's return with a 120-101 victory over the Nets. Davis, who had been sidelined for six weeks due to an adductor injury sustained in his first game with the Mavericks after being traded from the Lakers in exchange for Luka Doncic, scored 12 points on six-of-nine shooting in 26 minutes. Naji Marshall added 22 points off the bench, helping the Mavericks achieve their second consecutive win.
