NBA roundup: LeBron hits 40 in Lakers win, Mavs defeat Rockets

LeBron James put on a remarkable display on Sunday, putting up 40 points and tying his career-best with nine 3-pointers out of 10 shots, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 116-104 triumph over Brooklyn in the NBA.

James, a four-time NBA Most Valuable Player, showcased his exceptional skills on the court. He impressively made 13 out of 17 shots from the field, contributing to his team's victory. Alongside his scoring prowess, he also grabbed seven rebounds and provided five assists, earning him a well-deserved standing ovation from the Brooklyn fans.

Reflecting on his performance, James expressed his satisfaction with his shooting, particularly from the perimeter.

He emphasized his continuous effort to enhance his game and eliminate any weaknesses, especially on the offensive end. His success from the 3-point line was evident in this game.

This remarkable achievement marked James' 77th career 40-point game, placing him on par with the legendary Oscar Robertson, who holds the seventh spot on the all-time list. Wilt Chamberlain's record of 271 40-point games remains at the top.

James's passion for the game was evident as he expressed his love for basketball. He wholeheartedly dedicates himself to the sport, and in return, it rewards him.

Being mentioned alongside basketball greats like Oscar Robertson is a humbling experience for James, who admired Robertson's history and found inspiration in it during his upbringing.

In addition to James's outstanding performance, Anthony Davis contributed 24 points and 14 rebounds, while Rui Hachimura from Japan showcased his skills with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Lakers dominated the game from the start, securing a commanding 17-0 lead and maintaining their advantage throughout.

D'Angelo Russell reached the 10,000 career point milestone by scoring 18 points in the Lakers' victory, bringing their record to 42-33, slightly ahead of Golden State in the last two Western Conference play-in positions.

Lakers coach Darvin Ham expressed his gratitude for James' exceptional performance, stating, "We needed all nine of those threes. We made some mistakes, but we managed to overcome them thanks to his incredible shot-making abilities."

On the same day, Luka Doncic also made nine 3-pointers, scoring 47 points to lead Dallas to a 125-107 victory over Houston, ending the Rockets' 11-game winning streak and extending the Mavericks' own win streak to seven games.

Meanwhile, Golden State stayed in the race with the Lakers by defeating San Antonio 117-113, with Stephen Curry scoring 33 points for the Warriors and rookie Victor Wembanyama leading the Spurs with 32 points.

Nikola Jokic recorded his 23rd triple-double of the season, propelling the defending champion Denver to a 130-101 home win against Cleveland.

The 29-year-old Serbian center, a two-time NBA MVP, tallied 26 points, 18 rebounds, and 16 assists for his 128th NBA triple-double.

Nuggets coach Michael Malone praised Jokic, stating, "It speaks to why he's going to be a three-time MVP. (It was) him showing up and saying, 'I'm going to do what MVPs do. I'm going to lead us to a win.'"

Denver made a season-high 21 3-pointers and secured a playoff spot.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope of the Nuggets, who scored 22 points, commented, "We came out and really showed who we are, just getting after it defensively, rebounding, making shots. I thought we played amazing basketball."

The Nuggets shot 50-of-87 from the field overall (57.5%) and 21-of-33 (63.6%) from 3-point range while dominating the Cavaliers on the boards, outrebounding them 51-28.

Denver's record improved to 52-23, just half a game behind the Western Conference leader, Oklahoma City, in a three-team battle for the top spot.
