NBA roundup: Nikola Jokic continues incredible MVP form, Chris Paul moves up to second in all-time assists

Nikola Jokic, at the age of 29, delivered an impressive performance, scoring 48 points as the Denver Nuggets triumphed over the Atlanta Hawks with a decisive 141-111 victory on the road this past Sunday.

The three-time MVP, who had previously set a career-high with 56 points in a losing effort against Washington, showcased his dominance with 14 rebounds, eight assists, and three steals, proving to be nearly impossible to defend.

Michael Porter Jr. contributed significantly with 26 points, while Christian Braun and Julian Strawther added 17 and 13 points, respectively, in a commanding win against an Atlanta team that had entered the game on a six-game winning streak.

Denver's head coach, Michael Malone, expressed his admiration for Jokic's performance, stating that coaching the Serbian star is a remarkable opportunity.

"I cannot say I am surprised, as I have been fortunate to have the best seat in the house for the past decade, witnessing his excellence on a nightly basis," Malone remarked.

"He consistently rises to the occasion, never shying away from the challenges we place upon him. I deeply appreciate his mental and physical resilience."

"I consider it a privilege to coach him, and I never take that for granted."

Malone also expressed satisfaction with the victory, which improved Denver's record to 12-10 for the season.

"This was a necessary response," Malone noted. "There are areas we can improve upon, but we required a win, and we achieved it."

In other Sunday matchups, Tyler Herro led the Miami Heat with 34 points, helping them hand the Cleveland Cavaliers only their fourth loss of the season in a 122-113 victory.

Herro made five three-pointers and was flawless from the free-throw line, going nine-for-nine, contributing to Miami's third consecutive win. He received support from Duncan Robinson, who scored 23 points, while Jimmy Butler added 18 points.

Bam Adebayo significantly contributed to the victory, recording 16 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists, which enabled Miami to improve their season record to 12-10.

On the other hand, Cleveland had seven players score in double figures, with Darius Garland leading the team with 23 points, five rebounds, and five assists.

Cleveland's disappointing defeat was further compounded by an injury to Evan Mobley, who sustained a right ankle sprain, limiting his playtime to just 11 minutes and 46 seconds.

"I don't believe it's a serious injury," stated Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson regarding Mobley's condition, noting that the forward had initially attempted to continue playing despite the injury.

"He's a resilient player," Atkinson remarked. "It's unfortunate for our team."

In other league news, Jalen Suggs scored 26 points, leading the Orlando Magic to a 115-110 victory over the Phoenix Suns. Meanwhile, in San Antonio, Victor Wembanyama's performance of 25 points and 10 rebounds propelled the Spurs to a 121-116 win against New Orleans.

The Spurs' victory also marked a milestone for veteran Chris Paul, who surpassed Jason Kidd to claim second place on the NBA's all-time assists leaderboard, achieving his 12,092nd career assist during the second quarter.
