NBA roundup: Nuggets battle past T'Wolves to reclaim top spot

In their highly anticipated clash, Nikola Jokic led the Denver Nuggets to a remarkable victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, securing their position at the top of the Western Conference playoff race. Jokic's outstanding performance saw him score an impressive 41 points, propelling his team to a 116-107 triumph.

Denver emerged victorious in a closely contested match in Denver, where the lead changed hands 15 times before the Nuggets secured the win in the fourth quarter.

The outcome now places Denver, the current NBA champions, at the top of the Western Conference standings by a single game, with only two regular-season games left to play.

Facing off against lower-ranked Memphis and San Antonio in their final matches, Denver (56-24) is now heavily favored to clinch the number one seed in the West and secure home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.

Speaking to ESPN, Jokic credited their victory to their exceptional defense in the final quarter, emphasizing the tough competition in the Western Conference.

While downplaying the significance of Denver's return to the top spot, Jokic highlighted the challenging nature of the West, acknowledging the strength of potential first-round opponents like the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors.

Jokic, who contributed 11 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals, received support from Jamal Murray with 20 points and Michael Porter Jr. with 18 points.

On the opposing side, Anthony Edwards led Minnesota's scoring with 25 points, followed by Mike Conley with 19 points, and Rudy Gobert and Naz Reid with 13 points each.

Minnesota's loss dropped them to third place in the West, trailing behind the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Despite both teams having identical records of 55-25 with two games left, the Thunder hold the tiebreaker due to a superior divisional record.

Oklahoma City secured the second spot in the standings after a dominant 127-89 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leading the charge with 26 points in a 38-point win over the bottom-ranked Spurs (20-60).

Phoenix Suns responded strongly after their previous home defeat to the Los Angeles Clippers by securing a convincing victory on the road with a score of 124-108.

Devin Booker led the charge with an impressive 37-point performance, supported by Kevin Durant with 24 points and Bradley Beal with 26 points.

This win puts Phoenix in a favorable position to secure a spot in the automatic playoffs, with only two games remaining.

Currently in seventh place with a record of 47-33, they are closely trailing behind New Orleans, who hold the sixth spot with a 47-32 record.

Despite the victory, Booker acknowledges that there is still room for improvement as the postseason approaches. He believes that the team started the game slowly, which has been a recurring issue throughout the season.

Phoenix's triumph also has significant implications for other teams. Both the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers will now have to go through the play-in repechage in order to secure a spot in the playoffs.

In another game, the Dallas Mavericks secured their fifth consecutive win with a dominant 111-92 victory over the Miami Heat.

Luka Doncic led the charge with 29 points, and this result ensured that the New York Knicks clinched a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Bucks overcame the absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo due to injury and defeated the Orlando Magic with a score of 117-99.

Bobby Portis delivered an outstanding performance with 30 points, while Damian Lillard contributed 29 points.

The Bucks are now closing in on the second seed in the Eastern Conference with only two games left in the regular season.

Bucks coach Doc Rivers praised the contributions of Portis and guard Patrick Beverley, who finished the game with 13 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

Rivers described them as passionate players who bring energy to the team and have a natural ability to motivate their teammates. He emphasized the value of having players like them on the team.
