NBA roundup: Nuggets dominate Lakers, Bucks overcome Hornets despite Ball's 50-point performance

Nikola Jokic delivered an impressive performance, scoring 34 points and securing 13 rebounds, leading the Denver Nuggets to a decisive 127-102 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday. This win further solidified the Nuggets' dominance in their ongoing rivalry with the Lakers.
The Nuggets have now triumphed in 13 of their last 14 matchups against the Lakers, including eliminating them from the playoffs in the previous two seasons.
Although Serbian star Jokic fell short of achieving his sixth consecutive triple-double with only eight assists, his contributions were significant. Michael Porter Jr. complemented his efforts with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Jamal Murray and Russell Westbrook each contributed 14 points, with Westbrook also providing 11 assists.
In a commanding second half, the Nuggets outscored the Lakers 70-39, allowing head coach Michael Malone to secure his record-setting 443rd victory with the team.
"The most important aspect is that we secured the win," Malone remarked. "I was particularly pleased with our performance in the third quarter. We made crucial stops and transitioned effectively."
He further acknowledged the contributions of his players, stating, "I am not the coach I am without players like Nikola, Jamal, and everyone else who has been part of this team."
The Lakers, now at 10-6, had recently won six of their last seven games, while the Nuggets improved to 9-6 after a challenging stretch, having lost three of their previous four contests.
Austin Reaves led the Lakers with 19 points, while LeBron James contributed 18 points and Anthony Davis, who ranks second in NBA scoring, added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
In Milwaukee, Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 32 points and Damian Lillard contributed 31 points, guiding the Milwaukee Bucks to a 125-119 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, thereby extending their winning streak to four games.
Despite a remarkable 50-point performance from Hornets guard LaMelo Ball, the Bucks improved their record to 8-9, bouncing back from a difficult start to the season.
"The beginning of the season was challenging," Lillard acknowledged. "We are now starting to play the style of basketball we aimed for at the season's outset. We are beginning to feel confident in both our offense and defense."
Antetokounmpo also recorded 11 rebounds and six assists, while Ball tallied 10 assists for the Hornets.
Brandon Miller, who recorded 32 points and 11 rebounds, made a crucial 3-point shot with just 15 seconds left, bringing Charlotte within 121-119. However, Taurean Prince and Antetokounmpo secured the win by converting two final free throws.
Lillard emphasized the necessity for players to cultivate a stronger connection to overcome their early season struggles.
"Nobody is going to come to our rescue. No one will sympathize with us during tough times," Lillard remarked.
"We needed to unite, engage more in practice, discuss our challenges through film sessions... and ultimately come together on the court."
Wembanyama propels Spurs to victory
French sensation Victor Wembanyama contributed 25 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists, guiding San Antonio to a 104-94 triumph over the Western Conference-leading Golden State.
The Spurs also benefited from 22 points by Harrison Barnes, 19 from Stephon Castle, and nine points along with seven assists from former Golden State player Chris Paul.
"A number of players rose to the occasion and made significant contributions," Barnes stated. "It was a solid team victory. Winning games like this, together and in the manner we aspire to, greatly boosts our confidence."
San Antonio outperformed the Warriors 33-13 in the final quarter, securing the comeback victory and improving their record to 9-8, while Golden State fell to 12-4.
The Warriors, who struggled with a shooting percentage of only 36.9, were led by Andrew Wiggins with 20 points and Stephen Curry with 14 points.
Lauri Markkanen of Finland scored 34 points, propelling the Utah Jazz to a 121-106 victory against the visiting New York Knicks. This win ended the Knicks' four-game winning streak and halted a four-game losing streak for Utah. OG Anunoby was the standout for New York, contributing 27 points.
In Chicago, Scotty Pippen Jr., the son of the renowned former Chicago Bulls player Scottie Pippen, recorded 30 points and provided 10 assists, leading the Memphis Grizzlies to a 142-131 triumph over the Bulls. Pippen's performance was instrumental among eight Grizzlies who scored in double figures, while Zach LaVine led the Bulls with 29 points.
