NBA roundup: Nuggets push Lakers to brink of playoff elimination

The Denver Nuggets staged an impressive comeback, putting immense pressure on LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers to avoid elimination from the NBA playoffs. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers, led by an outstanding performance from Joel Embiid who scored 50 points, fought back and secured a victory against the Knicks.
The Lakers suffered a defeat at the hands of the defending champion Nuggets, who managed to overcome a 10-point deficit in the first quarter. Led by Aaron Gordon's impressive performance of 29 points and 15 rebounds, along with Nikola Jokic's contribution of 24 points, 15 boards, and nine assists, the Nuggets now hold a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series.
It is worth noting that no NBA team has ever managed to come back from an 0-3 deficit to win a playoff series. Lakers coach Darvin Ham acknowledged the importance of securing a win in the upcoming game to keep their hopes alive.
The Nuggets' dominance over the Lakers continued, as they extended their winning streak against them to 11 games, including their sweep in last season's Western Conference finals. Aaron Gordon emphasized that their success is not solely dependent on their opponents but rather on their own performance and the unity within their team.
After trailing by four points at halftime, the Nuggets displayed relentless determination in the third quarter, ultimately securing a comfortable victory in the fourth. Lakers coach Darvin Ham acknowledged the challenging nature of the game when the opposing team is consistently scoring while struggling to find baskets.
Although Anthony Davis delivered an impressive performance with 33 points and 15 rebounds, and LeBron James contributed 26 points, six rebounds, and nine assists, the Lakers faced difficulties due to D'Angelo Russell's scoreless performance and Davis' limited scoring in the final period.
Jamal Murray, who previously made the game-winning shot in the Nuggets' previous victory, added 22 points and nine assists, while Michael Porter Jr. contributed 20 points and 10 rebounds for Denver.
The Philadelphia 76ers and the Orlando Magic both managed to avoid falling behind 0-3 in their respective series. The 76ers secured a 125-114 victory over the Knicks, thanks to an impressive offensive performance by reigning NBA MVP Embiid.
Despite losing the first two games at Madison Square Garden, Embiid remained confident in his team's abilities and delivered on his promise to turn things around at home.
He showcased his skills by making 13 of 19 shots, including five of seven from beyond the arc. Embiid's outstanding third-quarter performance, where he scored 18 points, helped the Sixers overcome a halftime deficit and extend their lead to 13 points heading into the final quarter.
Despite facing challenges, such as playing with Bell's palsy, a condition causing muscle weakness in one side of his face, Embiid persevered and demonstrated his resilience.
Alongside his scoring prowess, he contributed eight rebounds, four assists, and a blocked shot. However, he was also assessed a flagrant foul for pulling Mitchell Robinson to the court by the ankle, which resulted in Robinson leaving the arena wearing a protective walking boot.
Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 39 points and 13 assists, while Josh Hart scored 20 points. Donte DiVincenzo, the hero of Game 2, had a quieter performance with just five points. The 76ers now have an opportunity to even the series on Sunday.
Meanwhile, in Orlando, the Magic dominated the Cleveland Cavaliers with a resounding 121-83 victory, reducing their series deficit to 2-1. Paolo Banchero played a pivotal role in the win, scoring 31 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
The Magic handed the Cavaliers their most significant playoff defeat ever. Banchero expressed his determination to be aggressive and acknowledged the importance of winning this game to avoid falling behind 3-0. The Magic will need to replicate their success on Saturday to continue their comeback in the series.
