NBA roundup: Pelicans close in on sixth seed as Knicks stun Celtics

On Thursday, the New Orleans Pelicans enhanced their chances of securing an automatic playoff spot by triumphing over the Sacramento Kings with a 135-123 road win.

Zion Williamson and C.J. McCollum both recorded 31 points each in a crucial Western Conference matchup in northern California. The Pelicans secured a wire-to-wire victory, showcasing their dominance throughout the game.

This win puts New Orleans in a favorable position to clinch sixth place in the West and avoid the play-in tournament. To secure their spot, they need to win their final two games against Golden State on Friday and the Los Angeles Lakers at home on Sunday.

The Pelicans took control of the game early on with an outstanding performance in the first quarter. They surged ahead with an 18-0 run, establishing a commanding 34-11 lead. This strong start set the tone for the rest of the game.

McCollum emphasized the team's aggressive approach in the first quarter, stating, "Throw the first punch to the last punch, and go out on our shield." He highlighted the importance of hard work, preparation, and enjoying the game at a high level.

With this defeat, Sacramento finds themselves in eighth place in the West with a 45-35 record, which is identical to the ninth-placed Golden State and the 10th-placed Lakers. The final standings in the conference are expected to be decided in the remaining games.

Golden State improved their record to 45-35 with a hard-fought 100-92 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. Stephen Curry led the Warriors' scoring with 22 points, while Jonathan Kuminga contributed 19 points to the win.

In the Eastern Conference, the top-seeded Boston Celtics suffered their second consecutive loss with a 118-109 defeat against the New York Knicks at the TD Garden.

Jalen Brunson of the Knicks continued his impressive form by scoring 39 points. He has now scored 35 points or more in his last five games. Brunson's exceptional performance included six three-pointers, shooting 15-of-23 from the field.

The Knicks currently hold the third position in the Eastern Conference with a 48-32 record, trailing behind the second-placed Milwaukee Bucks (49-31) by one game. There are two games remaining in the regular season.

Boston, with a record of 62-18, faced disappointment from their home fans as they were met with boos at the final buzzer. Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis accepted the crowd's response without complaint.

Porzingis stated that the team received boos at the end for a specific reason. He emphasized that the performance did not reflect the team that the fans adore, but assured that they will step up when necessary.

The Celtics coach, Joe Mazzulla, downplayed his team's consecutive losses, attributing it to an expected decrease in intensity after securing the top seed in the postseason.

Mazzulla expressed contentment with the outcomes of the last two games, highlighting the importance of entering the playoffs with resilience rather than just a string of victories.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Bulls dominated the Detroit Pistons with a 127-105 victory, led by DeMar DeRozan's 39 points and Nikola Vucevic's 27 points. This win solidified their position to face the Atlanta Hawks in the upcoming play-in tournament's first round.

In a match between two eliminated teams, the Utah Jazz emerged victorious over the Houston Rockets with a score of 124-121.
