NBA roundup: Pistons extend win streak, Edwards seals victory with clutch block on Shai

The Detroit Pistons achieved their seventh consecutive victory in the NBA, with a standout performance from Cade Cunningham, who scored 32 points and secured nine rebounds in a 106-97 triumph over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday.

Currently positioned in the playoff race, the Pistons improved their record to 32-26, marking their best performance at this point in the season in 17 years.

Detroit showcased a collective effort, with Tobias Harris contributing 20 points and Jalen Duren recording 12 points along with an impressive 19 rebounds.

The game remained competitive until the Pistons surged ahead late in the third quarter, matching their longest winning streak since the 2014-15 season.

Although the Clippers (31-26) narrowed the gap to five points in the closing moments, Cunningham responded with two free throws followed by a three-pointer to clinch the victory.

This resurgence in playoff contention follows two seasons in which Detroit held the worst regular season record in the NBA.

Last season, the team endured a 28-game losing streak, the longest in a single season and tied for the longest overall in NBA history.

Cunningham's significant role in this turnaround has not gone unnoticed, with his coach, J.B. Bickerstaff, expressing high regard for the 23-year-old's leadership qualities.

"You discuss leadership and the ability to grasp critical moments, which influences the entire team," he remarked.

"When teammates observe him diving for loose balls, it inspires everyone to make an effort," he continued.

"I am continually impressed by his situational awareness and the impact he has in every moment. We are incredibly fortunate to have him leading our team," he concluded.

In another matchup, the Oklahoma City Thunder, leaders of the Western Conference, faced a dramatic overtime defeat at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves, who mounted a remarkable comeback from a 25-point deficit to secure the win.

Jaden McDaniels, aged 24, led the Minnesota Timberwolves with a total of 27 points, complemented by 11 rebounds and four assists. Naz Reid, 25 years old, contributed significantly with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

For the Oklahoma City Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, 26, delivered an impressive performance, scoring 39 points along with 10 rebounds and eight assists, while Jalen Williams, 23, added 27 points to the tally.

The Timberwolves staged a remarkable comeback, overcoming a 22-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Despite trailing 121-105 with just 3:41 remaining, they managed to push the game into overtime.

In a tense overtime period, Gilgeous-Alexander's last-second attempt fell short, allowing Minnesota to secure a stunning victory that marked the franchise's largest comeback win.

"One possession at a time, we didn't focus on the score; we just kept working together as a team," remarked Nickeil Alexander-Walker.

In another matchup, the Denver Nuggets triumphed over the Indiana Pacers with a score of 125-116.

Nikola Jokic, 30, achieved a career-high with 19 assists, leading the Nuggets to reclaim the second seed in the Western Conference. He also scored 18 points and secured 9 rebounds. Aaron Gordon, 29, contributed 25 points, while Michael Porter Jr., 26, added 19 points.

The Nuggets established control in the first half, heading into halftime with a 64-58 lead, successfully bouncing back from their previous loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

"We knew this road trip was going to be a challenge and to respond to a tough home loss to the Lakers and start this road trip off with a win speaks a lot about our guys understand what time of the year it is and handling their business," said head coach Michael Malone (53).
