NBA roundup: Pistons slump to record-equalling 26th defeat, Lakers snap four-game skid

The Los Angeles Lakers ended their four-game losing streak with a 129-120 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. LeBron James led the charge with an impressive 40-point performance.

Meanwhile, the reigning champions Denver Nuggets, as well as Eastern Conference contenders Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, secured comfortable victories.

On the other hand, the Detroit Pistons suffered their own struggles, matching the league's longest single-season losing streak. This unfortunate record was previously held by the 2010/11 Cleveland Cavaliers and the 2013/14 Philadelphia 76ers.

Despite being an iconic franchise with NBA titles in 1989, 1990, and 2004, the Pistons haven't tasted victory since October 28th. In their recent game against the Brooklyn Nets, Mikal Bridges stood out with 29 points, six rebounds, and seven assists for the Nets, who had seven players scoring in double figures.

Jaden Ivey and Cade Cunningham put up a good fight for the Pistons, but their 14 turnovers resulted in 22 points for the Nets.

Brooklyn dominated in the paint, outscoring Detroit 62-42, and also had an 18-9 advantage in second-chance points.

The Pistons were in contention, trailing by only six points in the third quarter, but the Nets went on a 15-0 scoring run to secure the victory. Detroit will have another chance to face the Nets in Brooklyn on Tuesday, hoping to turn the tables.

A loss in that game would not only give them the single-season record for the longest losing streak but also put them one game away from matching the 28-game slide of the 76ers from the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.

Despite the difficult situation, Pistons coach Monty Williams commended his team's resilience and determination, emphasizing their unwavering focus and drive to win.

Lakers coach Darvin Ham made a strategic change to his lineup, opting to start Jarred Vanderbilt instead of D'Angelo Russell in order to prioritize their defensive effort.

However, it was the NBA's all-time leading scorer, James, who took charge and set the tone for the Lakers. He scored an impressive 15 out of his 40 points in the fourth quarter, effectively shutting down the Thunder's attempt to rally back from a 26-point deficit.

Anthony Davis also had a strong performance, contributing 26 points and 11 rebounds. Rui Hachimura made a significant impact off the bench with 21 points. Overall, the Lakers showcased their teamwork with 37 total assists and 16 successful three-pointers.

Meanwhile, in New York, Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Milwaukee Bucks to a convincing 130-111 victory over the Knicks. Antetokounmpo scored 28 points and demonstrated his versatility with seven rebounds and seven assists. Bobby Portis provided valuable support off the bench, contributing 23 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. The Bucks extended their winning streak to seven games and improved their record to 22-7.

Despite their impressive performance, the Bucks remain in second place in the Eastern Conference, trailing behind the Boston Celtics. The Celtics currently hold the best record in the NBA at 22-6 after a dominant 145-108 win over the Clippers in Los Angeles.

In Charlotte, the Denver Nuggets utilized a dominant third quarter to seize control of the game and ultimately secured a 102-95 victory over the Hornets. Michael Porter Jr. led the Nuggets with 22 points, while Nikola Jokic contributed 18 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists before fouling out late in the game. Denver outscored the Hornets 30-9 in the third period, effectively shutting down their opponents. This win marked the Nuggets' fourth consecutive victory.

Lastly, the Golden State Warriors continued their winning streak with a fifth straight victory, defeating the Portland Trail Blazers 126-106. Klay Thompson led the Warriors with 28 points, closely followed by Stephen Curry with 27 points. The Warriors showcased their offensive prowess and secured another impressive win.

The Memphis Grizzlies have continued their winning streak, now standing at 3-0 since Ja Morant's return from suspension. They secured a victory against the Hawks in Atlanta with a score of 125-119.

Desmond Bane had an outstanding performance, scoring 37 points, while Morant contributed 30 points and 11 assists for the Grizzlies. Despite their efforts, Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks managed a remarkable double-double with 30 points and 13 assists.

This game marked Young's seventh consecutive match with at least 30 points and 10 assists, tying him with the legendary Oscar Robertson for the longest such streak.

In another game, Luka Doncic, the star player for the Dallas Mavericks, showcased his skills by achieving a triple-double. He scored 39 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and provided 10 assists.

Doncic's exceptional performance led the Mavericks to a convincing 144-119 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Notably, Doncic sat out the fourth quarter, displaying his dominance throughout the game.

Unfortunately, the Spurs were without Victor Wembanyama, and their absence was felt during the match. Additionally, the star rookie suffered a setback as he injured his right ankle during pre-game warm-ups when he accidentally stepped on the foot of a courtside attendant.
