NBA roundup: Raptors stun Celtics, Rockets thrash Nuggets

R.J. Barrett recorded 22 points as the struggling Toronto Raptors reversed their fortunes against the Boston Celtics, achieving a commanding 110-97 victory over the defending NBA champions on Wednesday.
Currently positioned three spots from the bottom of the Eastern Conference, the Raptors secured only their 10th win of the season by effectively neutralizing Boston's offense at the Scotiabank Arena.
Barrett led a well-rounded offensive effort for Toronto, skillfully distributing the ball as all five Raptors starters reached double figures in scoring.
This victory served as a gratifying form of retribution for Toronto, who had previously endured a severe 125-71 defeat at the hands of the Celtics in Boston on December 31st.
"It was a challenging loss for us in Boston," remarked Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic following the game.
"This team is very cohesive and takes great pride in their performance, so we were determined to compete at the highest level. Everyone played a role tonight."
In addition to his 22 points, Barrett contributed 10 rebounds and eight assists, receiving support from Scottie Barnes, who added 18 points, while Jakob Poeltl recorded 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Defensively, the Raptors effectively contained Boston's star player Jayson Tatum, limiting him to just 16 points on 5-of-15 shooting.
With this win, Toronto improved to 10-31 in the Eastern Conference standings, while Boston fell to 28-12, now trailing leaders Cleveland (34-5) by 6.5 games.
Nuggets falter
In other action on Wednesday, the Denver Nuggets faced a disappointing 128-108 defeat at home against the high-flying Houston Rockets in a one-sided Western Conference matchup.
The Nuggets were dealt a significant blow before the game when three-time NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic was ruled out due to an elbow injury sustained during warm-ups.
With Aaron Gordon (calf) also sidelined, Houston capitalized on their advantage, securing a wire-to-wire victory. Jalen Green led the Rockets with an impressive 34 points, including six three-pointers.
Houston's fifth consecutive victory positions them in second place in the Western Conference with a record of 27-12.
Denver's head coach, Michael Malone, expressed disappointment regarding his team's inability to meet the challenge in the absence of key players Jokic and Gordon.
"When you are missing your starting power forward and center against a team ranked No. 2 in the Western Conference, you must perform nearly flawlessly," Malone remarked. "Unfortunately, we were far from that standard tonight. It was a disappointing evening overall."
In other Wednesday matchups, Stephen Curry showcased his shooting prowess by sinking seven three-pointers, contributing to a 31-point effort that led the Golden State Warriors to a narrow 116-115 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis.
Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, Jalen Brunson delivered an impressive 38-point performance, guiding the New York Knicks to a 125-119 overtime win against the Philadelphia 76ers at the Wells Fargo Center.
Mikal Bridges added 23 points, while Josh Hart recorded a triple-double with 10 points, 17 rebounds, and 12 assists, along with four steals. The Knicks improved their record to 27-15, maintaining their position in third place in the Eastern Conference, while the 76ers, missing the injured Joel Embiid once again, fell to 15-24, just outside the playoff spots.
In San Antonio, despite Victor Wembanyama's remarkable defensive display, the Spurs were unable to avoid a 129-115 defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies.
Wembanyama recorded eight blocks and secured 12 rebounds, but the Grizzlies held onto third place in the Western Conference with a record of 26-15, trailing the leaders, Oklahoma City, by eight games (33-6). Ja Morant led the Grizzlies with 21 points, 12 assists, and four rebounds, while Desmond Bane also contributed 21 points.
In New Orleans, Dejounte Murray's 30 points led the Pelicans to a 119-116 victory over the shorthanded Dallas Mavericks, who continue to be without injured stars Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic.
