NBA roundup: Shai stars in Thunder win, Grizzlies' struggles continues

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander achieved his fourth 50-point game of the season as the Oklahoma City Thunder, leaders of the Western Conference, secured a 137-128 victory over the Houston Rockets on Monday.

The NBA's leading scorer, Gilgeous-Alexander, recorded 51 points and seven assists, successfully converting all 10 of his free throw attempts, which contributed to the Thunder's impressive record of 50-11 for the season.

He began the game with remarkable intensity, scoring 20 of the Thunder's 30 points in the first quarter.

As a strong candidate for this year's Most Valuable Player award, Gilgeous-Alexander demonstrated his shooting prowess by making 18 of 30 attempts from the field, including five out of nine from beyond the arc.

Despite the Thunder's overall success, they faced challenges, as the Rockets held a nine-point lead in the second quarter before Oklahoma City managed to take a one-point advantage into halftime.

The Thunder asserted their dominance in the third quarter, extending their lead to 102-89 before the final period, during which Houston made a comeback, narrowing the gap to six points.

However, crucial three-pointers from Luguentz Dort in the closing moments of the fourth quarter ensured the Thunder's 27th home victory, against just four losses.

"It's about us just being who we are and we didn't have enough of it tonight, up to our standard, but we did enough to get the 'W'," said Gilgeous-Alexander.

"I'm just trying to be aggressive, trying to get my team energy, trying to make the right play. Whatever the ball and the game tells me to do, I do," the Canadian added.

Cam Whitmore led the scoring for Houston, achieving 27 points and securing 11 rebounds, while Reed Sheppard contributed 25 points for the 37-24 Rockets.

The Memphis Grizzlies, currently positioned fourth in the Western Conference, faced ongoing difficulties, suffering their sixth defeat in eight games with a narrow 132-130 loss at home to the Atlanta Hawks.

The match was intensely competitive, culminating in a last-second lay-up by Caris LeVert, which clinched the victory for the 28-33 Hawks. LeVert played a pivotal role in the win, scoring 16 points in the final quarter.

Zaccharie Risacher was the leading scorer for Atlanta, finishing with 27 points, while LeVert added 25 points coming off the bench.

Desmond Bane recorded his first triple-double for the Grizzlies, amassing 35 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds.

Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins expressed confidence that his team would overcome their recent struggles and recover from this defeat.

"We've done it every season that I've been here. I told the team afterwards that resilience is the best thing we have," he said.

"There are injuries, there are obviously deficiencies on the defensive side. We just have to rally, stay together, our group is going to respond and we have to play at the level that we are capable of."

Stephen Curry made a triumphant return to his hometown of Charlotte, guiding the Golden State Warriors to a 119-101 victory against the Hornets. He recorded 21 points and 10 assists during the game.

Miles Bridges was the standout performer for Charlotte, scoring 35 points and securing nine rebounds; however, the Hornets suffered their seventh consecutive defeat.

"We had some lows for sure," said Curry of the Warriors' performance. "We were convincing enough for stretches where we could get some stops but we can play better, for sure," he added.

The Dallas Mavericks experienced a significant setback as star guard Kyrie Irving sustained a left knee sprain during the first quarter, contributing to their 122-98 defeat against the Sacramento Kings.

The Mavericks, still grappling with the ramifications of the trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, have now lost four out of their last five games, while the Kings have secured four consecutive victories.

Irving's injury occurred while he was driving towards the basket, necessitating his removal from the court. He has become the fourth starter for the Mavericks to be sidelined due to injury. Additionally, Jaden Hardy twisted his ankle in the third quarter and was forced to exit the game.

"It just seems every time we get close to get someone back, someone else goes down, we are running out of bodies here," said Mavs head coach Jason Kidd.

Zach LaVine contributed 22 points, while DeMar DeRozan added 20 points for the Kings, who hold a record of 32-28.

In the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons advanced their playoff aspirations by defeating the Utah Jazz 134-106, with Cade Cunningham leading the team with 29 points and nine assists.
