NBA roundup: Thunder get revenge against Cavs, Suns and Pacers also victorious

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered an impressive performance, scoring 40 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder avenged their previous week's loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers with a decisive 134-114 victory in a one-sided matchup between the top teams in the NBA on Thursday.

Gilgeous-Alexander showcased his skills in a remarkable all-around display, marking the 18th 40-point game of his career and leaving the Cavaliers reeling at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City.

The 26-year-old concluded the game with 40 points, eight assists, and three rebounds, standing out in a contest that took many by surprise.

Luguentz Dort contributed significantly with 22 points, including six successful three-pointers out of nine attempts, while Jalen Williams added 19 points to the scoreboard.

Darius Garland was the leading scorer for Cleveland with 20 points, whereas Donovan Mitchell managed only eight points throughout the game.

This outcome positions both Oklahoma City and Cleveland with matching records of 34-6 at the summit of their respective conferences.

Following the game, Gilgeous-Alexander downplayed the importance of the victory.

"Tonight was a good performance. We executed our game plan effectively," the Canadian point guard stated during an interview with TNT television.

"However, for us, it was just another night of basketball, another opportunity to compete together, and another chance to be competitive.

"It happened to be a highly anticipated game, and it was broadcasted. But for us, playing at home in front of the best fans in the NBA, we gave our all, and the result was what it was."

Nonetheless, Gilgeous-Alexander acknowledged the satisfaction the Thunder derived from delivering such a thorough defeat to a team that had held the best record in the league prior to Thursday.

"They are the best of the best, and naturally, you want to challenge yourself against the top teams to gauge your own capabilities," he remarked. "We challenged ourselves, and I believe we succeeded."

The Cavaliers, who lead the Eastern Conference, had previously defeated the Thunder 129-122 in a closely contested game in Cleveland last Wednesday.

Most analysts had predicted a tightly contested rematch on Thursday between two teams widely regarded as potential contenders for the NBA Finals in June.

However, the Cavaliers struggled to recover after a dominant first quarter in which the Thunder surged to a 32-14 lead, fueled by an impressive 22-2 scoring run.

Oklahoma City maintained their aggressive play throughout the first half, capitalizing on numerous defensive lapses by Cleveland to establish a significant 75-49 advantage at halftime.

The Thunder forced the Cavaliers into 13 turnovers, converting these mistakes into 22 points during the first half.

The onslaught continued after the intermission, with the Thunder extending their lead to 33 points early in the third quarter, bringing the score to 87-54.

By the conclusion of the third quarter, the lead had ballooned to 38 points, with Cleveland trailing 119-81.

This commanding lead allowed Thunder coach Mark Daigneault to rest most of his starters in the fourth quarter, as the bench finished the game.

In other NBA action on Thursday, Devin Booker scored 37 points and Kevin Durant contributed 23, leading the Phoenix Suns to a 130-123 victory over the Washington Wizards on the road.

In Detroit, the Indiana Pacers triumphed over the Pistons with a score of 111-100, thanks to 28 points from Myles Turner and 26 from Pascal Siakam.
