NBA roundup: Timberwolves rally past Grizzlies as Thunder beat Jazz

The Minnesota Timberwolves dominated the fourth quarter, securing a commanding 118-103 win against the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday. This victory helped them maintain their position as the leaders of the NBA Western Conference, staying ahead of Oklahoma City. The Thunder also had a strong performance, defeating the Utah Jazz with a score of 134-129.
Anthony Edwards, the star player for the Timberwolves, overcame a sluggish start and showcased his skills in the second half, scoring 26 out of his 28 points. Notably, he contributed 12 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Timberwolves to outscore the Grizzlies by a significant margin of 37-17.
Reflecting on his performance, Edwards admitted to starting the game slowly and lacking readiness. Recognizing that their chances of winning were at stake, he made a conscious decision to elevate his game in the second half.
In addition to Edwards' impressive display, Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert made valuable contributions with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and six blocked shots. Naz Reid also played a crucial role off the bench, contributing 20 points to aid Minnesota in securing the hard-fought victory against the injury-plagued Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies, who are currently without their star player Ja Morant for the remainder of the season, faced additional challenges due to various other injuries.
Despite the Grizzlies' strong performance throughout the game, with Jaren Jackson Jr. scoring 36 points and Luke Kennard sinking five three-pointers for a total of 18 points, the Timberwolves managed to prevail and secure the win.
The Timberwolves extended their record to 30-11, maintaining a two-game lead over the Thunder. In their game against the Jazz, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander showcased his skills with an impressive performance of 31 points, six rebounds, and six assists.
Although Oklahoma City held the lead throughout the game, the Jazz, who had been on a six-game winning streak, put up a strong fight until the end. Jalen Williams stepped up in the fourth quarter, contributing 11 of his 27 points, while all five Thunder starters scored in double figures. This victory ended Oklahoma City's two-game losing streak.
With less than a minute remaining, the Jazz managed to reduce the deficit to four points. However, Walker Kessler's layup attempt was blocked by Chet Holmgren, and despite the Jazz's two failed attempts, Holmgren secured the win for Oklahoma City with a free throw.
Collin Sexton led the scoring for the Jazz with 31 points, closely followed by Lauri Markkanen with 26 points. Despite trailing by as much as 19 points in the first quarter, the Jazz managed to level the score late in the third quarter.
In other games, the Indiana Pacers triumphed over the Kings with a score of 126-121 in Sacramento. Notably, the Pacers achieved this victory without the presence of their injured playmaker, Tyrese Haliburton.
Bennedict Mathurin led the Pacers' scoring with 25 points, and a total of seven Pacers players scored in double figures.
Despite Domantas Sabonis's impressive triple-double performance of 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists, the Kings were unable to secure the win.
Jalen Brunson had an outstanding performance in New York, scoring 20 of his 41 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Knicks to a close 113-109 victory over the Washington Wizards.
After missing two games due to injury, Brunson returned with a bang, contributing not only with his scoring but also with eight rebounds and eight assists.
Julius Randle also had a solid game, adding 21 points for New York. Donte DiVincenzo and OG Anunoby each scored 19 points, helping the Knicks overcome 17 turnovers.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Bulls showcased their dominance in Toronto, with Nikola Vucevic and DeMar DeRozan both scoring 24 points. The Bulls took control early and managed to hold on for a 116-110 win against the Raptors.
Vucevic had an impressive performance, grabbing 14 rebounds and dishing out seven assists. Coby White also made a significant contribution with 23 points. The Bulls dominated in the paint, outscoring the Raptors 74-50.
Despite a strong effort from Scottie Barnes, who led Toronto with 31 points, the Raptors fell short. Barnes' finger roll layup gave the Raptors a brief lead of 109-108, but White responded with a clutch jump shot that secured the victory for the Bulls.
Reflecting on the game, Vucevic acknowledged the Raptors' resilience and physicality. He emphasized the importance of staying focused and adapting to their defensive strategies.
"We knew they're a team that never gives up. It's not going to be a pretty game with them," Vucevic commented. "They play very physical, and they play a lot of different ways defensively as well. So we just knew we had to stick with it."
