NBA roundup: Wembanyama hits another milestone for Spurs, Cavs extend win streak to 13 games

Victor Wembanyama achieved the distinction of being the fourth-youngest player to score 50 points in an NBA game when the 20-year-old Frenchman propelled the San Antonio Spurs to a 139-130 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday.

The first overall selection in last year's draft amassed a career-high 50 points in merely 26 minutes, concluding the game with an impressive shooting performance of 18-29, including eight three-pointers, which also marked a personal best.

The Spurs center, whose previous highest scoring game was 40 points, expressed difficulty in articulating the reasons behind his remarkable performance.

"I wish I could say that I woke up feeling a certain way or that I felt particularly smooth during warm-ups, but the reality is that in the NBA, we play every other day," he remarked.

"Every time we face challenges in warming up, we experience pain, we sweat, and we endure on the court. It truly is a minute-to-minute experience, culminating in 48 minutes of play each game," he elaborated.

This marked the third consecutive game in which Wembanyama had successfully made six or more three-pointers.

The only players to have scored 50 points at a younger age than Wembanyama are Brandon Jennings, LeBron James, and Devin Booker, all of whom were also 20 years old at the time.

The Spurs secured the victory once again without their head coach, Gregg Popovich. The team announced on Wednesday that he had suffered a mild stroke earlier this month but is anticipated to make a full recovery.

Wembanyama was not the sole player to surpass the 50-point threshold on Wednesday; Giannis Antetokounmpo recorded 59 points as the Milwaukee Bucks triumphed over the Detroit Pistons 127-120 in overtime.

The Greek superstar shot 21 of 34 from the field, contributing 14 rebounds and seven assists in what has been the highest scoring performance by any player this season.

"As a leader, I continually remind my teammates not to take moments for granted. Regardless of who is on the court, we must never give up and always seek ways to secure victory," stated Antetokounmpo.
