NBA roundup: Williamson lifts New Orleans to narrow win over San Antonio

In the closing moments of the game on Friday, Zion Williamson skillfully maneuvered towards the basket, securing a crucial layup that ultimately led the New Orleans Pelicans to a triumphant 114-113 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA.

Williamson had an outstanding game, finishing with 33 points and eight rebounds. He displayed his shooting skills by making 12 out of 21 shots from the field. In the crucial moments of the game, his dunk with 28.5 seconds left brought the Pelicans within one point, and with only 3.8 seconds remaining, he powered through the strong Spurs defense to secure the game-winning shot.

On the other side, Devin Vassell of the San Antonio Spurs had a commendable performance, scoring 28 points. However, his three-point attempt at the final buzzer fell short, preventing the Spurs from securing a victory.

Additionally, the sensational rookie Victor Wembanyama of the Spurs contributed 16 points and 14 rebounds to the team's effort. However, the Spurs struggled with turnovers, committing 18 of them compared to the Pelicans' nine.

Williamson, expressing his enthusiasm, stated that he lives for games like this, where the lead changed hands five times in the fourth quarter. He finds these challenging matchups to be a lot of fun.

It is worth noting that Williamson's dominant performance came the day after he was not selected for this year's All-Star game. Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks also faced the same snub, yet he responded with an impressive performance of his own. Young scored 32 points and delivered 15 assists, leading the Hawks to a 129-120 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Young, despite his remarkable season average of 27 points and 10.9 assists per game, did not receive an All-Star nod. Nevertheless, he achieved his 76th career game with at least 30 points and 10 assists, which ties for the fifth-most such games in NBA history. Alongside his scoring and playmaking, Young made seven of 11 three-point attempts and recorded three steals, contributing to the Hawks' third consecutive win.

Kevin Durant led the Phoenix Suns with 35 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Devin Booker added 24 points to the Suns' efforts. Although they momentarily took the lead in the third quarter, the Suns ultimately struggled with turnovers, committing eight of their 17 in the fourth quarter, allowing the Hawks to secure the victory.

Hawks coach Quin Snyder expressed that Trae Young, like any other NBA player, would appreciate being selected for the All-Star Game, but he believed that it wasn't the driving force behind Young's performance.

According to Snyder, "One of the remarkable things about Trae is that he's not motivated by individual accolades. He's focused on winning."

In other news, Los Angeles Clippers guard Russell Westbrook achieved a significant milestone by becoming the 25th NBA player to reach 25,000 career points. Westbrook contributed 23 points off the bench in the Clippers' 136-125 victory over the Pistons in Detroit.

Leading the way for the Clippers was Kawhi Leonard, who scored 33 points. Despite facing a 14-point deficit early on, the Clippers rallied and never trailed in the second half.

Westbrook reached the 25,000-point mark with a running layup late in the fourth quarter, extending the Clippers' lead to 134-115. He received congratulations from his teammate James Harden, who is also a member of the 25,000-point club, as well as other teammates.

Reflecting on the achievement, Westbrook expressed his gratitude for the support and camaraderie within the Clippers team, which has won 10 of their last 12 games. He stated, "It's a great group of guys. I truly appreciate the love and support from the coaches and my teammates."

Meanwhile, the Orlando Magic caused an upset by defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves, a strong Western Conference team, with a score of 108-106.

This loss, combined with the Oklahoma City Thunder's 126-106 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, resulted in the Timberwolves and Thunder being tied for the top spot in the Western Conference with a record of 34-15.

Paolo Banchero led the way for Orlando with 23 points as they overcame a 17-point deficit early in the game to surprise the Timberwolves.

Rudy Gobert and Anthony Edwards both scored 22 points for the Timberwolves, with Gobert also contributing 16 rebounds. However, the team struggled in the fourth quarter, shooting only 25% and scoring a mere 18 points.

In Oklahoma City, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander played a pivotal role in the Thunder's victory, scoring 31 points, grabbing five rebounds, and dishing out nine assists.

In the final match of the evening, Nikola Jokic, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, showcased his brilliance by achieving his 15th triple-double of the season. With an impressive performance, he contributed 27 points, 22 rebounds, and 12 assists, leading the defending champions, the Denver Nuggets, to a remarkable 120-108 triumph over the Portland Trail Blazers.
