NBA roundup: Wolves maul Nuggets and Brunson fires Knicks past Pacers

The Minnesota Timberwolves showcased their defensive prowess, delivering a commanding performance to secure a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven playoff series against the Denver Nuggets. With an impressive 106-80 road victory on Monday, they have firmly established their dominance.

The Timberwolves, seeded third, put relentless pressure on Denver to secure a second consecutive victory over the NBA champions as the series shifts back to Minneapolis for Game 3 on Friday.

Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards each contributed 27 points, but the standout performance came from Minnesota's suffocating defense, which disrupted Denver's rhythm almost from the opening tip.

Minnesota ended the game with 11 steals and 12 blocks, a stark contrast to Denver's six steals and five blocks.

Notably, the Timberwolves' dominant display was achieved without Rudy Gobert, the Frenchman who is a key defensive player in the team.

Gobert missed the game to be with his partner following the birth of their son earlier in the week.

Towns commented after the game, "When you're missing the defensive player of the year, you have to elevate your performance. We all knew the challenge of facing the defending champions, a talented team with some of the greatest players in the game's history. Our goal was to come here and secure the win."

The usually composed Nuggets might also be without star point guard Jamal Murray for Game 3.

Murray was captured on camera throwing a heat pack onto the court during the second quarter, potentially facing a suspension pending review by NBA disciplinary officials.

This incident symbolized Denver's struggles in a game where Minnesota took control, leading 28-20 at the end of the first quarter.

A disastrous second quarter for Denver saw them being outscored 33-15 by Minneapolis, resulting in the Timberwolves holding a commanding 61-35 lead at halftime.

Minnesota's solid defense never wavered in the second half, and they quickly extended their lead to 32 points early in the third quarter, leaving Denver's Ball Arena in stunned silence.

In Monday's other playoff game, Jalen Brunson had a sensational fourth quarter as the New York Knicks narrowly defeated the Indiana Pacers 121-117 in their Eastern Conference opener.

Brunson, the star player for the Knicks, ended the game with 43 points, six rebounds, and six assists, giving New York the upper hand in the best-of-seven conference semi-final.

His composed performance in the final minutes of the game propelled New York to victory in front of a lively crowd of 19,812 at Madison Square Garden.

Brunson scored an impressive 21 points in the fourth quarter, marking his fourth consecutive playoff game with 40 points or more.

Supporting Brunson, Donte DiVincenzo contributed 25 points, while Josh Hart delivered an outstanding performance with 24 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists, three steals, and a block.

On the other side, Myles Turner led the Pacers with 23 points, and Pascal Siakam added 19.

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau praised Brunson's team-oriented approach, emphasizing his dedication to winning and supporting his teammates.

Brunson's standout performance was the deciding factor in a thrilling game where both teams fought fiercely, with the lead changing hands multiple times throughout the match.

Indiana closed the gap to just one point at 118-117, however, a critical offensive foul was called against Turner on DiVincenzo with 13 seconds left, ultimately sealing their fate.

Game 2 will be held in New York on Wednesday.
